The Myth and Reality of Growth Mindset as a Predictor of Adult Success

It is the kind of claim that feels too hopeful not to share.

The most accurate early predictor of adult achievement, it says, is not intelligence, family income or parental education. It is whether a child reaches the age of ten believing that abilities can grow.

As a father, I understand the appeal immediately. It replaces inheritance and circumstance with something apparently teachable. It says the sentence a child carries into a difficult classroom may matter more than the advantages or disadvantages waiting outside it.

There is also a real body of psychology behind the idea of a growth mindset. Children who see ability as developable can respond differently to challenge, and some carefully designed interventions have produced small academic gains.

But the headline goes much further than the evidence. I could not find a longitudinal study that measured growth mindset at ten, followed children into adult life and found it outpredicted IQ, socioeconomic status and parental education. The research does not establish that ranking.

The correction is not that beliefs are irrelevant. It is that their value lies in what they can change at the next difficult moment, not in their ability to overpower every other influence on a life.

The claim combines three different questions

Before comparing predictors, “adult achievement” would need a definition. Does it mean educational qualifications, earnings, occupational status, creative work, health, relationships or life satisfaction? The factors that predict one outcome are not automatically the strongest predictors of another.

Then there is timing. Much of the best-known growth-mindset research studies school grades over a term or two. That matters, but it is not the same as predicting a career decades later.

Finally, an observed belief is different from an intervention. Students who already endorse a growth mindset may differ in previous achievement, school climate, parental support and many other ways. Teaching a mindset experimentally is a stronger test of cause, but it asks whether a particular lesson changes a particular outcome under particular conditions.

The viral claim slides between all three. It takes an association with school performance, treats it as a causal trait, then extends it into adulthood and ranks it above background and cognitive ability. No single study I found completed that chain.

What a growth mindset actually means

Psychologist Carol Dweck and her colleagues distinguish between an “entity” theory of intelligence, in which ability is viewed as largely fixed, and an “incremental” theory, in which it can be developed.

The important mechanism is a child’s interpretation of difficulty. If performance reveals a fixed quantity called intelligence, a hard task threatens identity. Avoiding challenge protects the label. A mistake becomes evidence about who the child is.

If ability can develop, the same difficulty can carry different information. A mistake reveals what has not been learned yet. Effort, a new strategy or help from someone else may change the next attempt.

This does not mean that anyone can become anything through effort. People differ in aptitude, resources, health, opportunity and the quality of instruction available to them. Nor does it mean repeating “you can do it” while leaving a child with an impossible task and no support.

A serious growth mindset is not limitless optimism. It is the narrower belief that current performance does not define the boundary of future performance.

The classic studies examined what happens after failure

One influential 1998 paper by Claudia Mueller and Dweck reported six studies involving fifth-grade children. After an initial task, some children were praised for intelligence, some for effort and others received neutral feedback. They were then given more difficult problems.

Children praised for intelligence became more concerned with demonstrating performance and showed less persistence and enjoyment after setbacks. Those praised for effort were more likely to choose learning goals and recovered better on subsequent tasks.

This is powerful evidence that ordinary adult language can alter how a child interprets one episode of success and failure. It is not evidence about adult achievement. The outcomes were motivation, task choice and performance within the experiment.

A 2007 longitudinal study followed 373 seventh-grade students across a difficult transition in mathematics. Students with a more incremental view of intelligence showed a more positive trajectory in maths grades over two years. A second, much smaller experiment taught seventh graders that intelligence could develop and reported improvements in classroom motivation.

Again, these were early adolescents and school outcomes, not ten-year-olds followed into adulthood. The distinction sounds fussy only until we realise how much certainty gets added each time the finding is retold.

Larger studies find effects that are small and conditional

The strongest modern evidence is not a story of mindset doing nothing. It is a story of modest effects that depend on who receives an intervention and the environment waiting afterwards.

A nationally representative US experiment randomly assigned 12,490 ninth-grade students to a short online growth-mindset programme or a control activity. Among 6,320 lower-achieving students, the intervention raised end-of-year core-course GPA by 0.10 points. Advanced maths enrolment rose from 33 to 36 per cent in the subset with available records.

The gains varied across schools. They were more likely to persist where peer norms supported challenge seeking. A belief planted in hostile soil did less.

Meta-analyses make the uncertainty clearer. A 2018 synthesis covering 273 effects and 365,915 students found a correlation of about 0.10 between growth mindset and academic achievement. That is real but small, and correlation cannot show which direction the influence runs.

A 2023 review of 63 intervention studies found an average achievement effect of 0.05 standard deviations, which became non-significant after correction for possible publication bias. When the authors restricted the analysis to the six highest-quality studies, the estimated effect was 0.02 and statistically uncertain.

Another 2023 meta-analysis argued that averaging everyone together can hide the students and contexts most likely to benefit. That debate remains active. Neither side describes growth mindset as the dominant predictor of adult success.

Why IQ and family background cannot simply be crossed out

IQ is not destiny, and it certainly is not a complete measure of a person. I have previously written about why high intelligence does not protect people from rationalising poor decisions. Intelligence can help someone build an argument without ensuring that the argument is wise.

Yet rejecting IQ as destiny is different from saying it has little predictive value. Cognitive ability, prior achievement, socioeconomic conditions and parental education all show durable associations with educational and occupational outcomes. Their effects interact rather than queuing neatly for first place.

A child’s mindset is also shaped by those environments. Believing improvement is possible is easier when a school supplies competent teaching, time, safety and a credible path from effort to progress. If repeated effort produces no support and no opportunity, a slogan about growth can become another way of blaming the child.

This is why I am wary of turning a hopeful psychological idea into a contest against structural conditions. Belief may change whether a child attempts the next problem. It does not make poverty, discrimination, unstable housing or under-resourced classrooms disappear.

In an earlier article, I argued that few people teach children to know their worth without tying it to performance. Growth mindset should not become a new performance demand, where a struggling child is told that the real problem is failing to believe correctly.

The useful lesson survives the correction

Parents and teachers do not need an exaggerated prediction to use the best part of this research.

We can praise a specific strategy rather than attach a permanent identity. We can say, “You kept testing different approaches,” instead of, “You are so smart.” We can treat an error as information, then provide the instruction and time needed to act on it.

We can also avoid praising effort mechanically. Effort that repeats an ineffective strategy is not automatically productive. Children need feedback, better methods, appropriate challenge and permission to ask for help.

The same distinction applies to adults. I have written about how researching self-improvement can create the feeling of changing without the discomfort of actually beginning. A growth belief matters only when it changes behaviour: choosing the harder page, returning after a poor result, seeking feedback or trying a different method.

My daughter will encounter things she cannot do on the first attempt. I want her to know that “not yet” is often more accurate than “I can’t”. But I also want her to know that difficulty is not a moral failure and asking for support is not evidence that her mindset is defective.

That is a less spectacular promise than the original claim. A belief held at ten does not outrank every other fact about a childhood or forecast an adult life with unique accuracy.

It can still change what happens after the next setback. Lives are built from many such moments, but no honest psychology turns one of them into destiny.
