Dubai’s Emerging Role in Specialist Debt Advisory Amid Growing Cross-Border Wealth

GTM meets Kem Kemal, Co-Founder of Henry Dannell, at Dubai International Financial Centre to discuss the specialist debt advisory firm’s regional ambitions, the complexities of international wealth and why Dubai is emerging as a strategic hub for global financial services.

As Dubai solidifies its status as a global financial hub, the demand for cross-border wealth financing is escalating rapidly. International firms increasingly view the emirate as a key gateway to the Middle East’s burgeoning community of entrepreneurs, investors, and high-net-worth individuals. This trend reflects the region’s economic diversification, rising foreign investment, and the growing sophistication of its financial markets.

Among the firms capitalizing on this momentum is Henry Dannell, a specialist international debt advisory company co-founded in 2019 by Kem Kemal. The firm has recently established a representative office at the Dubai International Financial Centre (DIFC), positioning itself to offer tailored debt advisory services closer to clients and professional advisers throughout the region.

Global Trend Monitor had the opportunity to meet Kem Kemal at the DIFC to explore Henry Dannell’s regional expansion strategy, its unique approach to specialist debt advisory, and the growing need for complex financing solutions as wealth and asset ownership become increasingly globalized.

Specialist Debt Advisory in a Complex International Market

Henry Dannell leverages an extensive network of over 500 lending relationships worldwide, enabling it to navigate intricate financing requirements for its clients. The firm helps identify optimal funding solutions across multiple international jurisdictions, supporting clients with diverse asset portfolios that may include real estate, businesses, and luxury goods spread across different countries.

While Henry Dannell’s regulated entities based in London continue to execute lending transactions, the new DIFC office underscores the firm’s commitment to growing its presence in the Middle East. This dual-location strategy enhances proximity to regional clients and advisers, strengthening long-term relationships without disrupting the established operational model centered in London.

The Middle East: A Strategic Growth Opportunity

According to Kemal, the Middle East presents a compelling growth landscape fueled by increasing international investments, economic diversification, and a rising number of globally mobile individuals whose financial needs extend beyond traditional banking avenues.

“Assets, investments, and ownership are becoming more international, and that makes financing more complicated,” Kemal explains. “A client may own property in one market, run a business in another, and hold luxury assets elsewhere. They need an adviser who can structure debt across all of it. We see growing demand for specialist debt advisory and cross-border financing expertise, and that is where we have chosen to focus.”

Integrating London and Dubai Operations

Despite the new DIFC presence, London remains the core hub for Henry Dannell’s lending execution. The company’s regulated entities in London continue to handle transactions, while the Dubai office functions as a strategic liaison point, providing closer access to professional advisers and clients across the region.

Kemal emphasizes that this expansion was part of a long-term strategy: “Opening it was part of a long-term plan from our early days, so it extends the existing model rather than replacing it.” This approach ensures continuity and regulatory compliance while enhancing the firm’s responsiveness to regional market dynamics.

Rigorous Deal Selection to Protect Credibility

With a vast array of lending relationships, Henry Dannell employs a stringent vetting process for potential deals. Every opportunity undergoes thorough due diligence on both the borrower and the prospective funding partner to ensure it meets strict bankability criteria.

“We test every opportunity before accepting a mandate to see whether it is genuinely bankable. That means due diligence on both the borrower and the funding partner, and detailed scrutiny of the transaction before it reaches a lender,” Kemal states. “We favour established and reputable institutions. Taking only deals we believe in protects our standing with lenders and gives clients a more credible route to funding.”

Why DIFC is the Right Hub for Specialist Debt Advisory

The DIFC is uniquely positioned as a global financial centre thanks to its convergence of international financial institutions, a robust regulatory framework, and a strong reputation for attracting high-calibre professional services firms. These attributes place it alongside financial centres like London, New York, and Hong Kong.

“For a business built on trust and cross-border relationships, that environment matters,” Kemal explains. “It brings together international financial institutions, a strong regulatory framework, a global reputation and a track record of attracting high-quality professional services firms.”

Looking Ahead: Expanding Across the Middle East

Henry Dannell plans to deepen its footprint beyond the UAE, targeting the broader Middle East region where economic growth and international investment continue to accelerate. The company anticipates serving an expanding community of globally mobile entrepreneurs, investors, and families who require sophisticated, transparent, and compliant debt advisory services.

“We intend to keep building our presence there, with DIFC as the platform. We also plan to stay focused on debt advisory, with the transparency, compliance and governance our clients expect,” Kemal concludes.

As the Middle East’s financial ecosystem evolves, firms like Henry Dannell demonstrate how specialist expertise in cross-border debt advisory is becoming indispensable for those navigating increasingly complex international wealth landscapes.
