Blacksmith hits unicorn valuation after Sequoia leads Series C

Blacksmith Secures $66 Million Series C Funding, Achieves $1 Billion Valuation

Blacksmith, a cutting-edge platform designed to streamline the process of building and testing software—including code generated by artificial intelligence—announced on Wednesday that it has closed a $66 million Series C funding round. The round was led by Sequoia Capital and values the company at an impressive $1 billion.

Founded to simplify continuous integration (CI)—the critical process of building, testing, merging, and validating code changes—Blacksmith addresses a growing challenge faced by development teams worldwide. According to co-founder and CEO Aditya Jayaprakash, the company’s mission is to make CI “less painful.” In a recent blog post, Jayaprakash highlighted the increasing difficulty companies face in keeping pace with the sheer volume of CI tasks, particularly as AI-generated code becomes more prevalent.

Adapting to the AI-Driven Software Development Landscape

“As agents write more of the world’s software, the question that matters is whether it can be trusted,” Jayaprakash emphasized. This concern underscores the importance of robust code validation tools that Blacksmith provides, ensuring that AI-assisted development does not compromise software quality or security.

Blacksmith’s platform automates and scales the execution of CI jobs, which are individual automated code checks essential for maintaining code integrity and reliability. To date, the company has processed over 90 million CI jobs, demonstrating significant adoption and trust among its users. Notable customers include fintech company Mercury and personal finance app Granola, reflecting Blacksmith’s reach across diverse industries.

Rapid Growth and Market Confidence

The recent $66 million Series C round marks a substantial milestone in Blacksmith’s growth trajectory. The company reported a 17-fold increase in annual recurring revenue, signaling strong market demand for its services. This funding round comes just two months after Blacksmith raised $45 million in a Series B financing that valued the company at $550 million.

Looking back further, Blacksmith’s valuation has soared dramatically—from $60 million at the time of its $10 million Series A round a year ago to its current unicorn status. Overall, Blacksmith has raised $125 million to date, positioning itself as a major player in the software development and AI validation space.

With Sequoia Capital’s continued backing and a rapidly expanding customer base, Blacksmith is well-equipped to scale its platform and address the evolving challenges of software development in an AI-powered era.
