A damaged cable might ignite nearby packaging, a welding spark can encounter solvent vapours, and a small incident can quickly escalate to involve fuel, aerosols, or LPG before staff can react. For owner-managers, this transforms garage fire safety from just a compliance task into a critical business-continuity issue. The key question isn’t simply which extinguisher to buy, but rather which combination best fits the specific hazards, layout, and people on site.

What Are the Five Main Types of Fire Extinguisher?

In the UK, fire extinguishers are red but feature a colour-coded panel to indicate their contents and appropriate use. Water extinguishers, marked with a red panel, are effective on Class A fires involving materials like paper, wood, and textiles. However, they must never be used on live electrical equipment or flammable liquids, as this can worsen the situation.

Foam extinguishers, designated by a cream panel, cover many Class A and B risks, including some flammable-liquid fires. Their suitability around energized electrical equipment depends on the product’s specific markings and the results of a thorough risk assessment.

Powder extinguishers, easily identified by their blue panel, are often described as versatile. Standard ABC powder can tackle Class A, B, and C fires, while specialist powders are necessary for Class D fires involving combustible metals. Powder can also suppress fires involving electrical equipment; however, its discharge obscures vision, can be inhaled, and may damage machinery, making it less ideal for occupied indoor workshops. When comparing dry powder extinguishers for workplaces, businesses should focus on the stated ratings rather than assuming every powder unit covers all risks.

Carbon dioxide extinguishers, with a black panel, are suited to Class B liquid fires and electrical equipment fires. They leave no residue, preserving tools and electronics, but provide limited cooling, so re-ignition remains a risk.

Wet chemical extinguishers, marked with a yellow panel, are primarily designed for Class F fires involving cooking oils and fats. These are more commonly found in staff kitchens rather than workshops. Government guidance emphasises that fire safety equipment must be suitable for reasonably expected fires rather than selected by habit.

Why Mixed Risks Demand a Combination

Garages present a complex intersection of common workplace fire causes: ageing wiring, chargers, and power tools; petrol, paint, and solvents; oily rags and packaging; pressurised cylinders; and hot work such as welding or cutting. The growing presence of electric and hybrid vehicles introduces high-voltage systems and lithium-ion batteries, which require specialised procedures and competent advice for fire safety management.

Placing a single extinguisher by the exit may leave significant vulnerabilities elsewhere. For example, a foam extinguisher might be suitable for ordinary combustibles and many fuel or paint-related risks, while a CO2 unit is necessary near electrical equipment. Powder extinguishers may be appropriate for outdoor or well-ventilated areas, gas-related risks, or specific operations, but their discharge can reduce visibility and contaminate precision machinery. Class D fires require specialist powder, and lithium-ion battery incidents demand a separate emergency response plan. The best approach derives from a competent fire-risk assessment tailored to the site, not from generic shopping lists.

Make Fire Safety Part of Operations

Fire extinguishers represent the last line of defence in fire safety. Owners should prioritise reducing ignition and fuel sources: store flammables correctly, remove waste and oily rags promptly, control hot work strictly, protect cylinders, and keep escape routes clear. Electrical equipment maintenance is critical to prevent fire hazards, though fixed annual Portable Appliance Testing (PAT) is not mandated by law in every case. Inspection and testing intervals should be determined based on the equipment type, its usage, the workshop environment, and historical findings.

The person responsible for fire safety must conduct regular premises assessments, update risk evaluations, maintain appropriate preventative measures, and provide comprehensive staff training and information. While legislation varies across the UK, legal duties around fire safety cannot be fulfilled merely by purchasing equipment. Extinguishers must be clearly positioned, routinely checked, and professionally serviced. Importantly, employees should understand that evacuation and contacting the fire and rescue service are the priorities over attempting to fight fires themselves.

Protect the Business, Not Just the Building

The difference between a near-miss and months of costly disruption often boils down to preparation: controlling hazards, matching equipment to risks, and ensuring staff confidence about when to evacuate. For garage and workshop owners, an integrated, mixed-risk fire safety plan safeguards not only staff but also customer vehicles, specialist tools, and ultimately the future viability of the business.
