Why Formula E Thinks It Can Beat Formula One at Its Own Game

Formula E: Racing Toward a Sustainable Future

Formula E has transformed dramatically in just 12 years, evolving from a niche experiment in electric racing into a global phenomenon. Initially, the all-electric racing cars could barely finish a race without a mid-race car swap, reflecting the infancy of electric vehicle (EV) technology. Today, Formula E boasts cars that can accelerate to speeds exceeding 200 miles per hour and a fan base that numbers in the hundreds of millions worldwide.

Jeff Dodds, CEO of Formula E, reflects on the early skepticism surrounding the concept. “12 years ago, if someone said we’re going to create an all-electric racing championship, people might have thought you were absolutely crazy,” he recalls. At the time, only about 300,000 electric vehicles had been sold globally, and their performance left much to be desired.

Since then, the EV landscape has shifted dramatically. BloombergNEF forecasts that 22 million EVs will be sold this year, with projections rising to 35-40 million annually by 2030. Formula E has positioned itself at the forefront of this transition, not just as a racing series but as a powerful platform advancing electric mobility worldwide.

Altering the Formula of Motorsport

Before leading Formula E, Dodds had a rich background in the automotive and motorsport industries, working with established brands such as Volvo and Honda. His experience encompassed a wide spectrum of racing disciplines, including Formula One (F1), MotoGP, and touring car championships. This extensive background informs his perspective on Formula E’s place within the motorsport ecosystem.

While F1 remains the benchmark for elite racing, Dodds views Formula E as a complementary yet distinct entity. Both series use open-wheel, single-seater cars, but the fundamental difference lies in powertrain technology. Formula E’s all-electric cars introduce new strategic dimensions due to energy limitations. Drivers must carefully balance when to conserve battery life and when to push aggressively, likened by Dodds to “a game of chess on the racetrack.”

Dodds contrasts the two series’ racing dynamics: “F1, for me, is nostalgic… Perhaps the bit I like least about it is the actual racing,” he admits, describing many F1 races as predictable “processions.” Formula E, by contrast, prides itself on parity among competitors. “Everyone has a chance of winning that race. That’s pretty rare in motorsport,” Dodds states.

With races designed to last under an hour, Formula E delivers fast-paced, thrilling competition that resonates with younger, tech-savvy audiences who value sustainability and innovation. This appeal is underscored by a recent multi-year agreement with Disney+ and ESPN to broadcast Formula E globally, starting with the 2026/27 season, expanding its reach and influence.

Speed Without Sacrifice

Unlike many organizations that adopt sustainability as a reaction to market trends, Formula E was founded on sustainability as a core principle. Dodds emphasizes this foundational commitment: “We’ve only ever had it as a core tenet of our business.”

Formula E’s mission revolves around three pillars: establishing a premier global racing championship, accelerating the shift from combustion engines to electric propulsion, and setting the standard for sustainability in sport. The series is the world’s first sport to earn B Corp certification, a rigorous designation recognizing high social and environmental performance standards.

Sustainability permeates every aspect of the race weekend—from powering events with hydrogenated vegetable oil and eliminating single-use plastics to charging cars exclusively with renewable energy. The latest Gen4 race car is engineered to be fully recyclable or reusable, underscoring Formula E’s commitment to circular economy principles.

Dodds challenges the misconception that sustainability requires compromise: “We produce the fastest-selling race cars in the world and the most exciting racing, while being the most sustainable sport.” This approach demonstrates that environmental responsibility and high performance can coexist seamlessly.

The World’s Most Exciting Test Lab

Beyond the spectacle of racing, Formula E functions as a cutting-edge laboratory for EV technology. The championship collaborates with six major manufacturers—Porsche, Jaguar, Nissan, Stellantis, Yamaha, and Mahindra—who use the racetrack to develop innovations that eventually enhance consumer vehicles.

Dodds highlights Porsche’s electric Cayenne Turbo as an example: “A lot of the technology in that car has been developed through, or come out of, Porsche’s Formula E program.” Similarly, Jaguar’s I-Pace benefited from innovations like over-the-air software updates, first tested on the Formula E circuit, illustrating the rapid transfer of race-proven technology to everyday drivers.

This real-time innovation accelerates the advancement of electric vehicles, helping to overcome barriers related to performance, reliability, and user experience.

Zero to 100: The Road Ahead

Reflecting on Formula E’s meteoric rise, Dodds shares perspective on the rapid evolution: “12 years ago, we had zero fans, zero TV audience, and a car that needed two cars to do a race. The car finished at 130 miles an hour. Ten years on, you’ve got 420 million fans, over half a billion TV audience, and you’ve got a car that accelerates to 100 kilometers in 1.6 seconds and races well over 200 miles an hour.”

This unprecedented growth defies easy prediction. Dodds prefers to keep ambitions open-ended, recognizing that the fast-paced nature of the EV industry demands flexibility. “I definitely have an ambition, but I wouldn’t want to constrain that by tethering us to a set of targets that are too low.”

As Formula E accelerates into the future, it stands as a testament to innovation, sustainability, and electrifying competitive spirit, reshaping not only motorsport but the future of transportation itself.
