Walmart Chief People Officer Says This Is How to Get Promoted

Date:

Walmart’s Approach to Employee Growth and Advancement

In today’s fast-paced retail environment, Walmart stands out not only for its vast product selection but also for its commitment to employee development. According to recent reports, Walmart promotes approximately 500 employees every single day, providing frequent opportunities for staff members to climb the corporate ladder and grow within the company.

For many Walmart associates, the job involves juggling diverse responsibilities—from filling online grocery orders to assisting customers on the sales floor. These roles demand a versatile skill set, including locating products, packing purchases, and providing helpful service, often during busy periods such as evenings, weekends, and holidays. This dynamic environment serves as a training ground where employees can develop the skills and experience needed to take on higher positions.

Qualities That Propel Employees Forward

Donna Morris, Walmart’s chief people officer, emphasizes that advancement at Walmart begins with excelling in one’s current role. Employees who stand out tend to be those who consistently deliver strong performance and make meaningful contributions. “They are focused as much, if not more, on being exceptional at what they’re doing today,” Morris explained in an interview with Business Insider.

Once employees demonstrate mastery of their current responsibilities, the next step involves showing readiness for greater challenges. This can be achieved by taking on more complex tasks, suggesting improvements, and volunteering for new initiatives. Morris encourages associates to “be the person that asks or provides volunteerism for new ideas or new initiatives,” highlighting the importance of proactive engagement as a pathway to promotion.

Compensation and Career Progression at Walmart

Walmart’s commitment to employee growth is also reflected in its compensation and promotion timelines. According to Walmart’s corporate website, U.S. associates typically receive their first promotion within about nine months. The average hourly wage for U.S. hourly employees is more than $18.50, although this varies by position and location, with a range spanning $14 to $37 per hour for team-associate roles. Supply-chain workers earn an average of $27.50 per hour.

Importantly, approximately 75% of Walmart’s U.S. salaried store, club, and supply-chain management began their careers in hourly roles. These associates earned an average of more than $123,000 in fiscal year 2025, demonstrating the potential for substantial career growth within the company.

Moreover, Walmart boasts a track record of developing talent that goes on to lead other organizations. Over the past decade, more than 115 former Walmart employees have advanced to become CEOs at other firms, underscoring the valuable experience and transferable skills gained by working at Walmart.

What Walmart Looks for in New Employees

When hiring, Walmart seeks candidates who demonstrate resilience and a willingness to embrace challenges. Donna Morris shared that she looks for individuals who have persevered through difficulties rather than giving up. “Be the type of person that takes on over and above what’s being expected of you,” she advised, highlighting the importance of a strong work ethic and initiative from the outset.

Walmart’s approach to talent development—centered around excelling in current roles, taking initiative, and continuously seeking growth opportunities—reflects a broader commitment to fostering long-term career success for its employees.
