The Humble Beginnings of the World’s First Webcam

In late 1991, about 15 researchers in the Systems Group at the University of Cambridge Computer Laboratory shared a single coffee machine located in the corridor outside a workspace known as the Trojan Room. This setup was convenient for those already inside the room but less so for colleagues working two or three flights away—often, they would make the trek only to find the coffee pot empty.

Quentin Stafford-Fraser’s retrospective account of the project reveals that the solution was born out of necessity and a few spare technical parts: a video camera, a frame-grabber, and an old 680×0 VME-based computer. They simply pointed the camera at the coffee pot to solve their daily dilemma.

A Small Problem Worth Solving

The coffee machine itself was hardly a technological marvel, but the irritation it caused was very real. Nobody wanted to waste several minutes crossing the building and navigating stairs only to find no coffee waiting.

At the heart of this was a simple yes-or-no question: was there coffee available right now? Stafford-Fraser and his colleague Paul Jardetzky realized that the equipment already available to them could answer this question remotely. The camera was mounted on a laboratory retort stand, with cables running beneath the floor to the computer and frame-grabber in the Trojan Room.

What XCoffee Actually Was

The software they developed had two parts. Jardetzky wrote the server program that captured images of the pot, while Stafford-Fraser wrote the client application, called XCoffee, which users could run on their workstations.

The client displayed a small grayscale picture of the coffee pot in a corner of the screen. Although the server could capture images every few seconds at various resolutions, the client updated the picture roughly three times a minute—enough to detect whether the pot was empty, full, or in the process of being filled.

It’s important to note that this system used a custom network rather than the World Wide Web, running across the lab’s own network stack and requiring the specialized XCoffee client. Thus, calling the 1991 installation a “webcam” merges two related but distinct moments. The camera-monitoring system came first; the true webcam, connected to the web, followed two years later.

The Moment It Reached the Web

By 1993, the rise of graphical web browsers enabled images to become practical on web pages. Daniel Gordon and Martyn Johnson revived the coffee-camera project with updated equipment, modifying the server to respond to HTTP requests.

Users no longer needed the XCoffee client; they could simply open a webpage and view the latest image through any web browser. This shift expanded the coffee pot’s visibility far beyond Cambridge’s walls.

The public-facing system used a video-capture board installed on an Acorn Archimedes computer. According to Cambridge’s technical description, the board captured one frame per second, encoded it as a JPEG, and served it to the web server on request.

The iconic image was just 128 by 128 pixels, grayscale, grainy, and updated intermittently. Yet its significance wasn’t in visual fidelity but in enabling someone anywhere in the world to see the current state of an ordinary coffee pot in Cambridge.

Why Such a Modest Tool Made Sense

This project exemplifies a timeless pattern in workplace technology: a minor but persistent inconvenience is identified, and a tool is built to make the relevant information visible and accessible.

A recent 2025 Dayforce survey of 6,178 workers, managers, and executives across six countries found that 88% encountered friction in their work environment, and 69% felt their organizations used too many technology platforms. The Cambridge researchers faced a small-scale example of this challenge—information about the coffee was available but required an unnecessary journey to obtain.

The coffee cam shifted that information to the researchers instead, removing friction and saving small but meaningful amounts of time.

From Internal Joke to Early-Web Landmark

Once the coffee pot’s image became publicly accessible, it attracted an audience far beyond the original lab members. People worldwide began checking the coffee level in a university corridor, turning the camera into an internet curiosity.

The project received press coverage, appeared on broadcasts, and became one of the early web’s best-known novelties. By 2001, contemporary reports estimated its audience at 2.4 million visitors. Some American tourists even contacted Cambridge’s tourist information to find the coffee pot’s physical location.

The appeal lay in its charming absurdity: at a time when the World Wide Web promised universal access to information, one of its first famous live images showed whether computer scientists had remembered to brew more coffee.

What the Coffee Pot Started

Following the Trojan Room coffee pot’s lead, webcams quickly proliferated in offices, homes, aquariums, city centers, and remote landscapes. In 1996, Jennifer Ringley launched JenniCam, streaming continuous images from her apartment for seven years. Traffic, wildlife, and weather cameras adopted similar methods, establishing a durable pattern on the web.

While the Trojan Room project did not directly invent video calls, security cameras, or livestreaming platforms—technologies that evolved through broader digital video and networking histories—it demonstrated a simple, effective web format: point a camera at something, publish updated images at a stable address, and allow remote viewers to check in.

The Habit of Glancing

The coffee cam couldn’t guarantee coffee would still be there by the time someone arrived; another researcher could empty the pot at any moment. However, it significantly reduced uncertainty.

Checking the coffee pot image became part of the lab’s daily rhythm: researchers would glance at the corner of their screen, assess the pot’s status, and decide if the trip was worthwhile.

This pattern of “glancing” at status indicators remains familiar in modern workplaces—whether it’s checking delivery trackers, shared calendars, or monitoring dashboards, people rely on visible states to inform their actions.

The coffee cam’s true achievement was transforming an invisible state into a visible one, making small but meaningful information instantly accessible.

The Camera’s Final Image

In 2001, the Computer Laboratory prepared to move from its central Cambridge location to the William Gates Building in West Cambridge. The Trojan Room would not survive the move, and the aging camera system was increasingly difficult to maintain.

The coffee cam feed was switched off at 10:54 UK local time (09:54 UTC) on 22 August 2001. Cambridge’s record of the shutdown describes the final frame as showing the fingers of Daniel Gordon, Martyn Johnson, and Quentin Stafford-Fraser pressing the power switch on the Acorn Archimedes computer that had captured public images for nearly eight years.

The original Krups coffee machine was preserved and is now displayed at the Heinz Nixdorf MuseumsForum in Paderborn, Germany, featured in an exhibition about the history of the internet.

The story of the Trojan Room coffee pot endures because its purpose is instantly relatable. The researchers weren’t trying to build a global broadcasting platform—they simply wanted to avoid unnecessary trips down several flights of stairs for an empty pot.

Stafford-Fraser and Jardetzky built an internal solution; Gordon and Johnson extended it to the web. Together, their efforts transformed a minor workplace convenience into the world’s first webcam.

The last image was not an empty room or a disconnected device but a few fingers reaching for the power switch—a final grainy frame before the coffee pot disappeared from the web.
