Overstory Secures $43 Million in Series B Funding
Overstory, a vegetation intelligence platform based in Amsterdam, has successfully raised $43M (approximately €37.16M) in a Series B funding round. This global platform utilizes artificial intelligence (AI) to assist utility companies in managing vegetation and wildfire risks. The funding round was spearheaded by Blume Equity, a growth equity firm that focuses on climate technology. Energy Impact Partners LP (EIP) also participated, alongside existing investors B Capital, Semapa Next, Pale Blue Dot, CapitalT, Convective Capital, Bentley Systems, MCJ, and Moxxie Ventures.
Investor Insights on Overstory’s Impact
James Sprinz, a Principal at Energy Impact Partners, highlighted the timely and essential nature of Overstory’s services, given the increasing number of extreme weather events each year. He explained how Overstory’s platform could help utilities take immediate action by utilizing satellite data to identify specific vegetation or infrastructure that needs attention or replacement.
Michelle Capiod, a co-founding Partner at Blume Equity, also praised Overstory’s potential for creating a significant positive impact on climate. She stated that Overstory’s transformation of satellite data into actionable insights could help utilities prevent climate-related disasters and improve operational efficiencies, making the company a prime investment for Blume Equity.
Future Plans for Overstory
Overstory plans to allocate the newly acquired funds to the development of its AI-based risk models and the expansion of its wildfire prevention tools. The company also intends to expand its operations on a global scale.
Overstory’s Unique Approach to Reducing Wildfire and Outage Risks
Overstory was founded in 2018 by Indra den Bakker and Anniek Schouten with the vision of harnessing artificial intelligence to help utilities manage vegetation and wildfire risk. The company developed a Fuel Detection Model that uses satellite imagery to identify locations where vegetation presents a high risk of igniting and spreading fire. This detailed data enables utility companies to prioritize resources and implement targeted maintenance strategies, thereby reducing wildfire potential and outage risks.
Driving Progress with a New Chief Operating Officer
Overstory has been operating and expanding for the past seven years, serving six out of the ten largest utility companies in the Americas. The company’s team has grown to more than 80 people, with diverse expertise ranging from machine learning and data science to arboriculture and wildfire management. The next phase of the company’s journey will be guided by its new Chief Operating Officer, Tamara Mendelsohn, a former Eventbrite CMO with a track record of successfully scaling companies from seed stage to IPO.
With the support of its investors and the leadership of its new COO, Overstory is poised to continue providing innovative, data-driven solutions that contribute to building a more resilient and reliable grid for utility companies.
