Amsterdam’s healthtech startup Healthplus.ai secures €2.3M

Amsterdam-based digital healthtech firm, Healthplus.ai, has successfully raised €2.3M in funding to further develop and expand its AI technology. The AI system, known as PERISCOPE, is designed to support hospitals in managing surgical care by predicting the risk of post-surgery infection. The fundraising round was led by Elevating Capital, and included contributions from LUMO Labs, ROM InWest, Pathena, and Leistone (Renza Family).

Healthplus.ai and its AI System

Founded in 2017 by Bart Geerts and Bart Steverink, Healthplus.ai aims to reduce surgical complications and support full recovery after procedures. The company’s AI system, PERISCOPE, is ISO- and CE-certified and connects with hospital systems to draw on electronic health record (EHR) data. This data is then used to estimate the risk of infection for each patient, enabling clinical teams to act earlier and limit preventable harm. The system also aids in making safe discharge decisions.

Marcel Broersma, Founding Partner of Elevating Capital, expressed his belief in the investment, noting that Healthplus.ai fits perfectly within their strategy to invest in technology-driven companies that demonstrably impact society. He praised the company’s combination of medical expertise with AI to predict clinical risks and enhance the efficiency and quality of healthcare processes.

The Necessity of Reducing Post-Surgery Infections

Across the globe, one in three surgical patients experiences a complication, affecting over 70 million people each year. Currently, five billion people lack access to safe and affordable surgical and anaesthesia care. Infections, often identified many days after surgery, remain the most common source of complications.

Healthplus.ai’s AI system, PERISCOPE, aims to lower these complication rates, limit their consequences, shorten recovery periods, and reduce hospital costs. By fitting into routine clinical processes and adjusting to the patient population in each site, PERISCOPE maintains consistent performance and regulatory alignment.

Healthplus.ai currently operates in the Netherlands, Belgium, Denmark, and the UK, with plans for further expansion across Nordic countries and North America. The company already has early pilots underway in the United States.

Utilising the Raised Capital

The funds raised will be used by Healthplus.ai to expand its presence in Europe and the US. The company aims to secure FDA clearance, improve system connections, and link its platform with major EHR providers such as Epic, Cerner, and ChipSoft. Furthermore, Healthplus.ai plans to widen its AI risk models to cover all parts of the perioperative process and various complication types.

Dr Bart Geerts, CEO and founder of Healthplus.ai, expressed his excitement about the late-seed investment. He stated that the investment will strengthen the company’s ability to bring clinically validated, regulatory-approved AI into everyday hospital practice, with a continued focus on collaborating closely with surgeons, clinicians, and hospital IT teams to ensure that predictive insights truly improve patient outcomes.

Investors’ Positive Outlook

Investors in Healthplus.ai have expressed their optimistic outlook on the company’s potential. Andy Lurling, founding partner of LUMO Labs, an investor in Healthplus.ai since early 2022, praised the company’s understanding of user needs and its proven impact. Antonio Murta, Co-Managing Partner and CEO of PATHENA, lauded the firm’s ability to predict infections in hospitalised patients, which is critical for patient protection, cost management, and resistance risk management related to antibiotic use. Tim Heijink, General Manager at Leistone, also echoed the sentiment, noting that Healthplus.ai aligns perfectly with their investment strategy of supporting technology-driven ventures that create real impact.

As Healthplus.ai continues its journey, the investment is a testament to the company’s stamina and achievements so far, and indicative of their immense potential going forward. With its advanced AI system, the company is set to bring about a significant shift in healthcare, improving patient outcomes and easing the burden on the healthcare system.
