Photon’s Bold Bet: Agents Over Mobile Apps

The AI startup Photon has taken a striking stance on the future of mobile technology by holding an actual funeral for mobile apps. The event, complete with speeches and a coffin for app icons, was held in a San Francisco church on September 17, symbolizing the company’s conviction that intelligent agents will eventually replace traditional mobile apps.

Photon specializes in enabling developers to build AI-powered agents that operate within popular messaging platforms like iMessage and WhatsApp. With this innovative approach, the company recently secured $4.5 million in seed funding to further develop its technology. This financial boost follows a rapid growth phase where Photon signed up over 40,000 developers and achieved a tenfold increase in revenue within just four months.

A Developer-Centric Vision

Co-founder and CEO Daniel Tian described the “app funeral” as a partly tongue-in-cheek event that also served as a developer day, featuring industry panels from companies such as Vercel, Stripe, and OpenAI. The funeral’s theatrical elements underscored a serious belief: the era of mobile apps is waning, giving way to the rise of AI agents integrated directly into the messaging platforms users already frequent.

“Honestly, it’s going to take a while, but I think, directionally, it’s inevitable,” Tian said, emphasizing the shift from apps to agents as a fundamental transformation in how people interact with technology.

The Shift From Apps to Agents

Photon’s core thesis is that users no longer wish to download and manage countless apps. Instead, they prefer seamless access to intelligent agents that function within existing messaging ecosystems such as iMessage, WhatsApp, Telegram, SMS, and more. This approach leverages platforms users are already comfortable with, avoiding friction in discovery and adoption.

This concept is being tested in the market by Meta’s Muse, an AI app that has rapidly ascended to the top of app store rankings. However, Tian envisions a broader opportunity focused on developers who want their applications to interact naturally through messaging services. Photon caters to this demand by offering a comprehensive package of developer tools—including a unified API, an extensible channel framework, a command-line interface (CLI), and an observability suite—allowing for the creation and management of agent experiences across multiple communication channels.

From Hackathons to Seed Funding

The idea for Photon emerged from the co-founders’ own experiences building consumer apps during their student years, particularly at hackathons. They repeatedly encountered the challenge of app discoverability. By creating an agent that operated within iMessage, they found a way to reach users directly through a platform already ingrained in daily routines.

For example, Tian had developed a bot that could text friends back on his behalf via iMessage. After open-sourcing this technology on GitHub, it gained thousands of developer users, motivating Tian to leave UPenn’s M&T program and Zhu to leave high school to focus on the venture full-time, with Zhu later becoming a visiting student at MIT’s Media Lab.

Remarkably, the open-source version of Photon still accounts for 98% of its usage today.

Professionalizing the Platform

In April, the founders launched a managed, hosted version of Photon’s platform, offering subscription tiers to monetize their service. This hosted platform guarantees 99.95% uptime, significantly surpassing the reliability of running the open-source version locally. Moreover, it is SOC 2 Type II and HIPAA-compliant, enabling use cases within healthcare and other regulated industries.

The platform has attracted over 40,000 developer sign-ups, with paying customers now onboarded. While specific revenue figures remain undisclosed, Photon reports a 10x revenue increase, less than 3% churn, and a fivefold growth in messaging volume over the past month.

Diverse Customer Base and Strategic Partnerships

Photon’s customers span various sectors, including Corgi Insurance, social introductions app Boardy, Gen Z dating platform Ditto, business banking platform Rho, finance AI assistant Fliptexts, and AI email client Slashy. These clients are building agents tailored to fintech, consumer AI, and other vertical markets.

Strategic integrations further bolster Photon’s ecosystem. Partners include Vercel (with Eve and ChatSDK), Nous Research (whose Hermes agent utilizes Photon for iMessage), and Tencent’s QClaw and NanoClaw platforms. The startup also benefits from framework and infrastructure integrations with LangChain, Mastra, Convex, Render, Railway, and Telnyx, among others.

Notably, Vercel is also a new investor, participating in Photon’s seed round co-led by Gradient and A*, alongside HongShan, Z Fellows, Llama Ventures, Karman, and other angel investors.

Looking Ahead: The Future of Agent Communication

Photon estimates that, across both its hosted and open-source offerings, its technology reaches millions of end users. While the current focus is on agents interacting with humans, Tian foresees a future where agents increasingly communicate with other agents, creating a dynamic agent-to-agent (A-to-A) layer.

“I think, in the future, agents will be able to find you the agent that can do the right things — so it’s going to be the A-to-A communication layer,” Tian explained. For instance, a user’s AI assistant organizing travel plans could automatically enlist specialized agents for booking flights or hotels, streamlining complex tasks through interconnected AI services. This agent-to-agent-to-person (A-to-A-to-P) model represents a promising frontier in AI interaction.
