Understanding AI’s Impact on Student Learning and Critical Thinking

Recent research has shed light on how the introduction of AI tools like ChatGPT is reshaping the way students approach learning and problem-solving. A comprehensive study led by researchers at the University of California, Irvine, analyzed student behavior and performance before and after the launch of ChatGPT in late 2022. Their findings reveal a complex interaction between AI assistance and students’ long-term understanding, raising important questions about the balance between technological aid and cognitive development.

Insights from a Decade of Student Data

The U.C. Irvine research team collaborated with McGraw Hill to examine a vast dataset spanning 10 years from Aleks, a widely used adaptive math platform. By mining millions of problem-solving sessions completed by students ranging from fifth grade to college level between 2015 and 2025, the study identified the late 2022 release of ChatGPT as a critical dividing point for analysis.

To pinpoint where AI was most likely influencing student work, the researchers categorized Aleks math problems into two types: word problems, which could be easily copied and pasted into a chatbot, and graphing problems, which required more interactive engagement and were difficult to submit to AI tools.

After ChatGPT’s introduction, the time students spent on word problems dropped significantly while their accuracy on these problems paradoxically increased. This suggests that some students were leveraging AI to generate answers quickly rather than engaging deeply with the material. However, when students took supervised exams without AI access, their ability to answer word problems correctly fell by approximately 25% compared to pre-ChatGPT cohorts, while performance on graphing problems remained unchanged.

Sina Rismanchian, a Ph.D. candidate at U.C. Irvine and lead author of the study, explained in an interview with The New York Times that AI tools enable students to offload the step-by-step thinking required for solving math problems. This accelerates homework completion but simultaneously undermines long-term conceptual understanding.

The Nuanced Relationship Between AI and Critical Thinking

Additional research cited by Rismanchian supports the idea that overreliance on AI can blunt critical thinking skills. In a multi-institutional experiment, adults who increasingly relied on language models to handle logical and reasoning tasks showed a marked tendency to avoid challenging problems they were otherwise capable of solving. This phenomenon mirrors broader findings that excessive dependence on AI may foster a habit of giving up rather than persevering through difficult tasks.

Dr. Adam Green, a cognitive neuroscientist at Georgetown University, highlighted this issue by comparing the brain’s aversion to effort to the body’s evolutionary drive to conserve calories. He argues that AI’s convenience may be “making us dumber” by short-circuiting the natural development of problem-solving skills, especially in younger learners who now have an easier alternative.

Productive AI Use: Tutoring Without Sacrificing Skills

Despite these concerns, AI is not inherently detrimental to learning. A July study from Middlebury College, which analyzed the habits of over 200 undergraduate students, found that those who used AI as a tutoring aid—seeking guidance and explanations rather than full solutions—achieved higher test scores and produced higher-quality essays. This suggests that when used thoughtfully, AI can complement traditional learning and help maintain critical thinking skills rather than erode them.

These findings underscore the importance of adapting educational strategies and AI usage to foster productive engagement. Encouraging students to actively participate in problem-solving, rather than passively outsourcing answers, can help preserve the cognitive benefits of struggle and mastery.
