Young Adults Want to Pursue This Surprising Dream Career

Young Adults Shift Their Aspirations from Influencing to Healthcare Careers

Move over, influencers — young adults have a new top dream job. A recent survey conducted by retailer PacSun and analytics firm GlobalData, involving over 6,000 U.S. respondents aged 11 to 24, reveals a notable shift in career interests among the younger generation. For the first time, traditional aspirations to become influencers, YouTubers, or content creators have been surpassed by a growing enthusiasm for careers in medicine and healthcare.

This change marks a significant reversal compared to previous years. In PacSun’s 2025 survey, the role of an influencer topped the list, with 22.2% of respondents aspiring to enter this field, while medical careers trailed at 19.4%. This year, however, healthcare-related professions rose to 19%, nudging influencers down to 18.8%. This shift reflects evolving perceptions about job stability, growth opportunities, and the realities of building a career in the digital space.

Why Healthcare Is Becoming the Preferred Career Path

Healthcare’s rising appeal can be attributed to several factors. According to Business Insider, the sector offers steady demand and consistent job creation in an increasingly competitive employment landscape. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reported that healthcare and social assistance accounted for 18% of all new jobs added in August, totaling 28,400 positions. Labor Department projections further indicate that private healthcare and social assistance will add more jobs than any other major sector between 2025 and 2035.

Among healthcare roles, nurse practitioners are expected to experience particularly rapid growth. Employment in this occupation is projected to increase by 41% over the next decade, compared with a 3.5% growth rate across all U.S. jobs. This robust expansion highlights the sector’s resilience and attractiveness for young adults seeking meaningful, secure careers.

The Challenges Facing Aspiring Influencers

Despite the allure of the influencer lifestyle—which promises travel, brand partnerships, and a large audience—breaking into this field has become more difficult than ever. The influencer business demands relentless content production and agility to adapt to evolving platform algorithms and policies. Platforms like YouTube have tightened their monetization requirements; for example, new applicants must now achieve 8,000 watch hours or 20 million Shorts views to qualify for ad-revenue sharing.

The market saturation is another significant hurdle. The Interactive Advertising Bureau estimates there are over 1.5 million full-time creators, a figure that has increased 7.5-fold since 2020. Additionally, millions more engage in content creation as hobbyists or side hustles. Algorithms increasingly tailor content to individual viewers, making it harder for creators to attract broad new audiences.

Financially, only a small fraction of influencers earn substantial incomes. A 2025 report by CreatorIQ found that the top 10% of creators received 62% of brand-ad payments, while just 11% earned at least $100,000. Median earnings declined to $3,000 even as average earnings rose, underscoring the income disparity within the creator economy.

In light of these trends, it’s understandable why many young adults are recalibrating their career ambitions toward fields like healthcare that offer stability, growth, and meaningful impact. This shift not only reflects changing job market realities but also highlights the evolving values and priorities of the next generation entering the workforce.
