When it came to Cal AI’s viral success, a small army of influencers paid off

Zach Yadegari’s Meteoric Rise in the Tech World

Zach Yadegari has achieved remarkable success for someone who only recently graduated from high school. At just 19 years old, Yadegari is the founder of Cal AI, an AI-powered calorie tracking app that has captured widespread attention and grown virally over the past two years. His story, which he shared at TechCrunch Disrupt, illustrates how strategic influencer marketing and innovative technology can propel a startup to prominence in today’s competitive landscape.

The Launch and Viral Growth of Cal AI

Founded in 2024, Cal AI rapidly gained traction, largely due to Yadegari’s savvy use of influencer marketing. By recruiting a dedicated network of social media personalities to promote the app, the company quickly generated impressive user growth. Within just two years, Cal AI amassed over $30 million in revenue—a feat that culminated in its acquisition by MyFitnessPal in March 2026 for an undisclosed amount, as reported here.

Yadegari recounted that an early breakthrough happened when a single influencer’s post resulted in approximately a thousand new users in two days. This moment proved to be a pivotal validation of their marketing approach.

Influencer Strategy: A Formula for Success

Onstage at TechCrunch Disrupt, Yadegari explained the company’s approach to influencer partnerships. “From there, we figured out, okay, this can actually work for us, and so we started recruiting influencers as fast as we could — paying as many people as possible to start posting for us,” he said. He described the growth as “pretty linear,” with each post delivering a predictable but rapid increase in user acquisition.

Key to this success was negotiating clear performance-based payouts with influencers, many of whom were “broke college kids” eager for immediate income. Yadegari shared, “You just ask them, okay, we’ll pay you this, but we need to get us at least this amount of use and keep posting until you get there.” This performance-driven model created a win-win scenario that fueled sustained growth.

Equally important was Yadegari’s focus on partnering with influencers who had “very tight communities,” allowing Cal AI to reach engaged and relevant audiences efficiently.

Perspectives on Education and Family Support

During his talk, Yadegari acknowledged the crucial role his family played in supporting his entrepreneurial ambitions, with his father present in the audience. However, when asked about the role of formal higher education in his success, Yadegari was candid and humorous. “I think the only real reason to go to college is if you want to have a fun social time as a kid and be with other people,” he quipped, drawing laughter from the crowd. This perspective reflects a growing sentiment among young tech founders who prioritize real-world experience and rapid innovation over traditional academic pathways.

Looking Ahead: The Launch of Persona

Building on his success with Cal AI, Yadegari recently launched Persona, an AI agent startup that has already raised $10 million in funding, demonstrating strong investor confidence in his vision. The company’s mission is to “make computing seamless with human life,” aiming to integrate its personal AI assistant across various platforms such as iMessage, apps, email, and phone calls.

Yadegari emphasized that, unlike many AI services, Persona intends to develop a comprehensive hardware ecosystem to complement its software, creating a more immersive and accessible user experience. This ambitious approach could position Persona as a significant player in the evolving AI assistant market.
