Addressing the U.S. Accounting Talent Shortage Through a Global Lens

Molly Liu and Aman Puri are approaching the persistent shortage of accounting professionals in the United States from an innovative, global perspective. On Monday, they revealed that their AI-driven talent marketplace, MAVI, founded in 2023, has officially emerged from stealth mode. This platform is designed to bridge U.S. companies with highly skilled, AI-proficient financial and accounting professionals from around the world, delivering top-tier talent within days.

According to Liu, co-CEO of MAVI, the U.S. accounting sector is currently grappling with a shrinking workforce, compounded by a lack of AI fluency among remaining professionals—skills that are increasingly vital for driving enterprise growth. Simultaneously, many American companies hesitate to engage with global talent, often due to perceived complexities in hiring, managing cross-border teams, or doubts about the quality of overseas candidates.

The Rise of AI-Proficient Global Talent

“There’s been a new wave of tremendous talent, a really high bar that is equal or even better than the U.S.,” said Liu, emphasizing the quality found in the global workforce. MAVI’s platform not only connects companies with this talent but also simplifies the typically cumbersome aspects of international hiring—handling cross-border contracts, legal compliance, and payroll management. The company focuses on securing full-time, long-term roles, primarily targeting mid- to senior-level positions that enhance in-house finance teams.

Drawing from her experience at companies like Ramp, Lyft, and Dropbox, Liu observed that while automation tools have advanced, they cannot entirely solve the talent shortage. “AI will automate away many entry-level roles in finance and accounting, which will further exacerbate the talent shortage at the mid-level experience level, given there will be less entry-level talent growing into the mid-level over time,” she explained. This highlights a critical gap: as AI handles routine tasks, the demand for seasoned professionals capable of nuanced judgment grows.

The Evolving Role of Accountants in an AI-Driven World

The definition of an accountant is shifting in the era of AI. Liu describes an AI-proficient accountant as someone who not only possesses solid finance and accounting fundamentals but also expertly leverages AI tools within workflows. This includes integrating large language models (LLMs) and being familiar with the latest AI-native ERP systems and tools. In contrast, traditional accountants typically have limited exposure to AI integration and management within finance functions.

She further noted, “The more AI tools a company adopts, the more pressure that adds to those in senior roles. They are increasingly expected to add more of their reasoning skills. Finance teams are now being pushed to do more with less.” This underscores a crucial insight: while AI can automate repetitive work, human expertise remains indispensable for strategic decision-making and oversight.

Backing and Growth of MAVI

In 2023, MAVI secured a $4 million seed round led by Harlem Capital, a fact the company disclosed concurrently with their public launch. Since then, the platform has grown to include over 3,000 accounting professionals and serves enterprise clients such as the personal care company Athena Club. Liu expressed a clear vision for the future: “We have a very strong point of view as to what the future of the finance team looks like. The work for us is focusing on that high-skill talent and that new layer of judgment that is paramount to all finance teams and all business functions as a whole, to be able to operate at the next level and beyond.”

As companies increasingly adopt AI tools, the demand for accountants who can blend technical skills with strategic judgment is set to rise. MAVI’s approach not only addresses the talent shortage but also anticipates the evolving needs of modern finance teams, positioning itself as a vital partner in the transformation of the accounting profession.
