Modal Motors is trying to cut China out of electric motors entirely

Revolutionizing Electric Motor Manufacturing in the U.S.: Modal Motors Takes on China’s Rare-Earth Dominance

Lately, there has been a growing conversation about reshoring manufacturing to the United States, particularly in the realm of hard technology such as drones and robotics. Michael Van Steenburg, a seasoned expert in electric motor production, believes he is at the forefront of this movement with his new venture, Modal Motors. After spending over a decade crafting electric motors across the U.S. and North America, Van Steenburg aims to build electric motors anew—this time eliminating the reliance on rare-earth magnets altogether. This strategic choice is designed to sever dependence on China’s tightly controlled supply chain for these critical materials.

Modal Motors is poised to make a significant impact as one of the startups competing in Startup Battlefield 200 at the upcoming TechCrunch Disrupt event. Van Steenburg emphasizes the urgency of his mission, noting China’s recent moves to restrict exports of rare-earth magnets to the U.S., a tactic that has sent ripples through global supply chains and underscored the fragility of current dependencies.

Addressing the Supply Chain Challenge with Innovation

While several companies in the U.S. are attempting to establish domestic electric motor manufacturing, Van Steenburg critiques their approach. He points out that many are still relying on rare-earth magnets, materials that remain difficult to source domestically with a fully developed supply chain years away from realization. “Other people are ‘reshoring,’ [but] they’re basically knocking off Chinese motors and just doing it in the U.S. But they’re hoping that the U.S. rare-earth magnet system is going to get up to speed fast enough,” Van Steenburg explains. “It’s going to still be a while longer before they can actually replace China.”

Modal Motors’ novel approach sidesteps this bottleneck by designing motors that do not require rare-earth elements, thus providing a more sustainable and secure supply alternative. This strategy not only enhances U.S. manufacturing independence but also addresses national security concerns tied to key technology supply chains.

Cutting-Edge Products Designed for Modern Applications

Modal Motors is currently developing two flagship products ahead of their showcase at Disrupt. The first is a compact electric motor tailored for drone applications, which also boasts versatility for use in fans, blowers, and actuators. Their design focus is on minimizing mass while maximizing torque density and efficiency, critical factors for performance in aerospace and robotics sectors.

The second product is the more unconventional “Hybrid Enigma Drive,” a planar or flat electric motor engineered to fit into lower-profile spaces where traditional cylindrical motors may not suffice. This innovation could open new possibilities in device design and integration, emphasizing Van Steenburg’s commitment to pushing the boundaries of electric motor technology.

Decades of Expertise Fueling a Vision for Independence

Van Steenburg’s experience extends back to the automotive industry, where he worked on hybrid gas-electric drivetrains in the late 1990s. Intriguingly, one of his early projects was related to China’s “People’s Car,” a government initiative aimed at mass motorization. Reflecting on that era, Van Steenburg finds a certain irony in his current work to establish a China-free electric motor supply chain. “It’s kind of comical,” he remarks, “thinking back on that experience and how much the world has changed.”

Despite the evolving global landscape, Van Steenburg’s persistent outsider mindset and dedication to tackling difficult challenges remain steadfast. He notes, “I always tell people that the clock started ticking 25 years ago, and in that whole time, I’ve watched a slow-motion train wreck as China’s been going around the world, grabbing mines, grabbing mineral rights, doing all these things, and slowly but surely monopolizing the entire rare-earth supply chain.”

His work with Modal Motors exemplifies a strategic, forward-thinking response to these realities, aiming to bolster U.S. manufacturing resilience and innovation in a high-stakes global market.
