Why an Hour on Your Phone Feels Like Hard Work with Little to Show For

An hour slips away scrolling through your phone, and afterward, your mental haul might boil down to just three things: a man cutting marble, a strong opinion about interest rates, and a dog on a skateboard. None of these snippets stick in any meaningful way. Despite the effort, the time feels like work—but without the reward of learning or retention.

This disconnect between the sensation of exertion and the absence of lasting knowledge has been explored by cognitive scientists, revealing that willpower alone can’t explain it.

A feed is a run of cold starts

When you read a book, your brain loads a consistent setting—a cast of characters, a narrative arc, or a line of reasoning—and immerses itself continuously in that context. This sustained engagement allows for deeper understanding and retention.

In stark contrast, a social media feed offers no such stability. Every post arrives with its own unique topic, tone, format, and implicit rules. This means your brain’s attention system must constantly reconfigure itself to process each new item.

Beyond just switching focus, each piece demands a quick mental verdict: Is this true? Is it funny? Is it relevant to me? This rapid-fire evaluation happens post after post, creating hundreds of micro-decisions during even a short scroll session.

Psychologists Joshua Rubinstein, David Meyer, and Jeffrey Evans dissected this process in a study published in the Journal of Experimental Psychology: Human Perception and Performance. They describe two phases: goal shifting—deciding to switch tasks—and rule activation—adjusting mental instructions to the new task. Each switch costs a few tenths of a second, which sounds negligible until multiplied by the hundreds of switches in an hour of scrolling.

While their experiments focused on arithmetic and shape-sorting rather than social media, the inference holds: frequent switching is cognitively costly.

The part that stays behind

Switching tasks leaves a cognitive residue. Sophie Leroy, now a professor at the University of Washington Bothell, introduced the concept of attention residue in a 2009 paper in Organizational Behavior and Human Decision Processes. Her experiments showed that when people are abruptly pulled from one task to another, their performance on the new task suffers because part of their attention remains stuck on the previous one—especially if the first task was unfinished.

Scrolling through a feed mimics this unfinished-task pattern: posts are dropped mid-thought and immediately replaced, creating a mental backlog that undermines focus. Although Leroy’s work was lab-based and not conducted on phone usage, the analogy highlights why scrolling may impair attention.

Forty-seven seconds

Gloria Mark, a professor of informatics at the University of California, Irvine, has tracked how long users stay on a single screen since 2004. Back then, the average duration was about two and a half minutes. In a recent interview with the University of California, she reported that this figure has dropped dramatically to roughly 47 seconds, with a median of 40 seconds—meaning that half of all screen interactions are shorter than that.

These numbers come from multiple studies over two decades and measure screen behavior rather than reading habits. People still read lengthy books, but often away from browsers and feeds, highlighting a fundamental shift in how we engage with information digitally.

Why a book behaves differently

Does the medium of reading affect comprehension? Pablo Delgado and colleagues analyzed 54 studies involving over 171,000 participants in a meta-analysis published in Educational Research Review. Their findings revealed a consistent, though modest, advantage for paper reading over digital. This gap was more pronounced when reading was timed rather than self-paced, applied to informational texts rather than narratives, and widened over recent years—an unwelcome trend for digital natives.

Pooling such a vast amount of data strengthens the reliability of this result, even though the effect size remains small.

Maryanne Wolf, a leading expert on the reading brain at UCLA, argues in a Guardian op-ed that skimming digital content suppresses the slower, deeper cognitive processes essential for understanding—like drawing inferences, making analogies, verifying claims, and empathizing with perspectives. Reading too fast leaves no room for this critical engagement.

Where the tiredness comes from

The mental fatigue experienced during prolonged scrolling stems from a different dynamic, uncovered in another strand of Gloria Mark’s research.

In a 2008 CHI conference study, Mark and her colleagues Daniela Gudith and Ulrich Klocke interrupted participants mid-task and observed their reactions. Surprisingly, those interrupted finished their tasks faster and maintained quality, but reported elevated stress, frustration, time pressure, and effort.

This suggests a form of mental compensation: the brain exerts more effort to manage fragmented work. While this study focused on working tasks rather than social media scrolling, the parallels are striking. The flatness and irritability people feel after long scrolling sessions reflect the stress described by Mark’s participants.

Ultimately, an hour on a feed involves hundreds of rapid decisions, each demanding a quick assessment of content relevance and truth. The content itself becomes secondary; the real work is in the constant deciding.

No one bills you for that mental labor, but the tiredness you feel afterward is the unmistakable receipt.
