From Artistic Aspirations to Viral Success: The Journey of Oskar Flodstrom
Oskar Flodstrom’s story is one of creativity, resilience, and entrepreneurial spirit, illustrating how unconventional paths can lead to remarkable success. Growing up, Flodstrom loved to draw and create, but he doubted that pursuing art as a career was realistic. Instead, he considered becoming an engineer, hoping it might offer a creative outlet. However, his perception changed when he learned more about the engineering profession. At 23 and based in Los Angeles, California, Flodstrom shared with Entrepreneur that the reality of engineering felt “kind of sad” to him.
The global pandemic disrupted his senior year of high school, prompting a pivotal decision: Flodstrom chose to forgo college. Financial constraints and skepticism about traditional education aiding his artistic ambitions influenced this choice. Inspired by the U.S. record producer and DJ known as Kenny Beats, he began channeling his creativity into music production, demonstrating early signs of his self-starter mentality.
Balancing Survival and Passion: Teaching Swim Lessons and Creating Art
To support himself financially, Flodstrom took up teaching swim lessons while working on his art in his spare time. His resourcefulness shone through when he searched Facebook Marketplace for free items to decorate his apartment. There, he found a clear, rounded acrylic base—a perfect foundation for his creative project.
Without a car, Flodstrom took the bus to retrieve the piece, lugging it back to his home. Although it sat untouched for months, he envisioned transforming it into a pill bottle-shaped side table. Using inexpensive materials like foam for the top, he slowly brought his concept to life with an investment of approximately $120, including paint and a custom-printed label.
Viral Breakthrough: The Pill Bottle Side Table
Earlier this year, Flodstrom completed the pill bottle side table, a unique piece blending everyday objects with artistic flair. His modest approach extended to the production process; for instance, he leveraged his approachable demeanor to negotiate a better price on the label printing, paying $12 instead of the usual $30.
Initially considering featuring the table in a music video, Flodstrom instead documented the creation process and shared it on social media under the handle Erik Oskr. His previous ventures included selling a chair inspired by an avocado, also sourced from free materials found on the streets of Los Angeles, reflecting a sustainable and inventive mindset prevalent among many Gen Z creators.
Collaboration and Growth: Partnering with NO LOGO
The pill bottle video went viral in June, capturing the attention of NO LOGO, a company dedicated to supporting founders by manufacturing products without requiring them to build factories. NO LOGO offered to produce a free sample based on Flodstrom’s design, suggesting improvements such as a more stable lid material. They also assisted him in setting up a Shopify website (erikoskr.com), facilitating his entry into e-commerce.
At the time NO LOGO delivered the sample, Flodstrom was navigating a transient lifestyle, living out of a car he had purchased. Despite this, he agreed to an interview about his creation, a decision that would soon prove fortuitous.
From Slow Beginnings to Explosive Sales
While initial social media promotion faced challenges—including Instagram AI flagging his video for featuring an “Adderall” label—the breakthrough came when Flodstrom showcased an alternative use for the pill bottle piece as a laundry hamper. This video garnered an unprecedented one million views per hour over ten hours, resulting in 200 sales and significant momentum.
Within two weeks, the pill bottle piece grossed $150,000 in sales. Daily revenue stabilized between $1,500 and $4,000, depending on advertising efforts. Flodstrom estimates his profit margin to be about five times the cut taken by NO LOGO, who cover manufacturing costs with a modest percentage.
Looking Ahead: Building a Brand Beyond the Pill Bottle
Despite his rapid success, Flodstrom remains grounded. At the interview time, he was days away from moving into a new apartment, cautious not to let early achievements lead to complacency. He envisions the pill bottle table as just the beginning of his creative enterprise, with plans to release innovative products such as a giant razor blade mirror, a lava lamp crafted from a Sprite bottle, and even a bong made from a milk jug.
To sustain and expand his business, Flodstrom is actively engaging across social media platforms including TikTok, Instagram, and YouTube, exploring affiliate marketing opportunities, and experimenting with streaming to generate additional revenue streams. Though still learning the ropes of entrepreneurship, he is committed to building a sustainable business rooted in his artistic passions.
Reflecting on his journey, Flodstrom humbly states, “I don’t feel like an artistic genius by any means. I still want to prove myself in that realm. So I don’t even know what to say most of the time. It feels like a fantasy. A daydream.” His story is a testament to the power of perseverance, creativity, and leveraging digital platforms to turn a simple idea into a thriving business.
