The Hidden Power of Gaze Aversion in Thoughtful Conversations

Imagine a candidate in a job interview pausing to glance at the ceiling for four seconds before answering a challenging question about her biggest professional failure. Observers might quickly label her as evasive—after all, two of the three panelists jotted down notes, and one later described her behavior as such. However, this common assumption overlooks a crucial insight: she wasn’t avoiding the question; she was searching for the right words. The intense scrutiny of three faces made her internal search for an answer more difficult.

Gaze aversion, or looking away during conversation, often carries an unfair reputation. In many professional settings, it’s misread as a sign of dishonesty, boredom, or poor upbringing. Yet, science reveals a more practical and less judgmental truth: people frequently look away to think more clearly and deeply.

A face is a flood of information

The human face is one of the most information-rich stimuli we encounter. Our brains continuously process subtle cues such as eye movements, micro-expressions, and whether a facial gesture is a frown or a squint. This intense processing demands significant cognitive resources, which must be redirected when we engage in complex thinking.

Research by Arthur Glenberg and colleagues in 1998 provides compelling evidence for this. Across five experiments, they found that people avert their gaze more as questions become harder, that embarrassment alone doesn’t explain this behavior, and notably, that looking away actually improves cognitive performance. Their explanation was straightforward yet powerful: averting the gaze disengages individuals from external distractions, thereby enhancing internally directed thought processes (Glenberg et al., 1998).

Further studies at Kyoto University by Shogo Kajimura and Michio Nomura strengthened this understanding. When participants generated verbs for nouns while watching videos of faces with either direct or averted gaze, direct gaze slowed word retrieval—especially in demanding cognitive tasks. Although this experiment used videos rather than live interactions, it highlights the disruptive effect of direct eye contact on complex verbal thinking (Kajimura & Nomura, 2016).

How gaze aversion develops and signals difficulty

Gaze aversion is not innate; it develops through childhood. Research indicates that five-year-olds rarely look away during cognitive tasks, but this behavior increases steeply during the early primary school years and stabilizes around age eight.

Gwyneth Doherty-Sneddon and Fiona Phelps explored this phenomenon by questioning 36 eight-year-olds face-to-face and via live video link, with tasks varying in difficulty. They found that gaze aversion increased notably in face-to-face settings and that task difficulty strongly influenced how much children looked away. High levels of gaze aversion were reliable indicators that a child was cognitively engaged and finding the material challenging (Doherty-Sneddon & Phelps, 2005).

Importantly, this pattern also appears in autistic children and those with Williams syndrome, suggesting that gaze aversion is fundamentally linked to cognitive processing rather than social disengagement. This insight urges caution in interpreting a child’s gaze avoidance as rudeness or aloofness (Doherty-Sneddon et al., 2013).

Cultural differences shape gaze norms

The rules governing eye contact and gaze aversion are far from universal. A study by a team from the University of Tokyo and a colleague in Finland measured heart rates and subjective impressions while Japanese and Finnish participants viewed faces with direct or averted gaze.

While physiological responses were similar, subjective judgments diverged starkly: Japanese participants perceived direct gaze as angrier and less approachable compared to Finnish participants. The researchers attributed these differences to cultural display rules rather than innate biological responses, underscoring that there is no single “correct” amount of eye contact (Hietanen et al., 2013).

For business professionals and communicators, this research highlights the importance of adapting to cultural expectations rather than enforcing a rigid eye contact standard.

Dispelling the myth: gaze aversion and deception

One of the most persistent myths in both popular culture and law enforcement is that liars avoid eye contact. In a survey of 99 British police officers, 73% believed that gaze aversion was a reliable indicator of deception.

However, Samantha Mann and her team’s research challenges this stereotype. By studying 338 international airport passengers—some truthful and others deceptive about their travel—researchers found no significant difference in gaze aversion between liars and truth-tellers. Interestingly, liars tended to maintain more deliberate eye contact, likely as a strategy to appear credible. This finding cautions against assuming that looking away signals dishonesty, or that intense eye contact confirms truthfulness (Mann et al., 2012).

Practical tips for navigating gaze in conversation

Understanding the true role of gaze aversion in communication can help us improve interactions:

  • Allow pauses: When someone looks away after a tough question, it usually means they are thinking deeply. Interrupting the silence can disrupt their thought process.
  • Change the setting: Engaging in conversations while walking, driving, or doing household chores reduces the pressure of constant eye contact and can facilitate more open, thoughtful discussion.
  • Use intentional gaze aversion: If you need time to think, looking away deliberately and saying something like “Give me a second” can signal that you’re processing, not withdrawing.
  • Rethink eye contact as persuasion: Research by Frances Chen and colleagues found that increased eye contact can actually reduce attitude change in listeners who initially disagree. Watching a speaker’s mouth instead of their eyes led to more openness to new ideas in lab settings (Chen et al., 2013).

Eye contact remains an important social tool, but it is cognitively costly to maintain. Often, the person who looks away during a conversation is choosing to invest their mental energy in crafting a thoughtful response rather than in managing social signals.
