Papa Johns Expands in Mexico as U.S. Sales Struggle

Papa Johns Finds New Growth Potential in Mexico with KM Capital Partnership

Papa Johns, the well-known international pizza chain, is turning its attention to Mexico for a fresh wave of expansion and market growth. The company recently announced a strategic partnership with KM Capital, a Mexico-based investment firm founded in 1986. KM Capital will take over 44 existing Papa Johns locations across Mexico, with ambitious plans to further invest in operations, branding, and growth throughout the country.

Enrique Ruiz Mandujano, CEO of KM Capital, highlighted the strong pizza culture in Mexico as a key factor behind their confidence in the brand’s future success. “Mexicans have a strong passion for pizza, and we see an opportunity to grow the Papa Johns’ brand,” he stated, signaling a robust outlook for the partnership’s impact on the Mexican market.

International Growth Offsets U.S. Challenges

While Papa Johns faces challenges in the United States, its international business continues to show promising results. The brand recently posted its seventh consecutive quarter of positive same-store sales internationally, with a 1.5% increase in the second quarter. Conversely, the U.S. market has experienced an 8.3% decline over the same period, prompting leadership to reconsider strategies domestically.

CEO Todd Penegor has been focusing on prioritizing key international markets like Mexico, while simultaneously closing underperforming locations in the U.S. to strengthen franchisee health. The approach appears to be a deliberate effort to replicate the successful international playbook in North America, aiming to revitalize the brand’s domestic performance through lessons learned abroad.

Strategic Vision for Papa Johns in Mexico and Beyond

Operating approximately 6,000 restaurants in about 50 countries, Papa Johns is a global presence in the pizza industry. The partnership with KM Capital represents a strategic push to deepen the company’s foothold in Latin America, a region with growing consumer demand for quick-service dining options.

If Mexico’s performance aligns with KM Capital’s optimistic projections, this partnership could become a pivotal growth story for Papa Johns in 2026 and beyond. The move also underscores the importance of localized expertise and investment in achieving sustainable international expansion, especially as the brand navigates a challenging year overall.

For entrepreneurs and franchise investors, the Papa Johns and KM Capital collaboration offers a compelling case study in leveraging regional market knowledge and operational strength to unlock new opportunities in a competitive landscape.
