  • Incorporate recovery periods into social plans proactively. For example, follow a lively Saturday night with a quiet Sunday morning to replenish mental reserves.
  • When explaining these needs to others, use direct, factual language. Saying “a couple of hours outdoors a week is what keeps the rest of the week working” is clearer and more compelling than vague terms like “needing space.”

Sensory processing sensitivity appears early in life, is influenced by genetics, and is not overcome by sheer willpower. Instead, two hours of weekly nature contact acts as essential maintenance, sustaining wellbeing and productivity throughout the rest of the week.
