Rethinking the Self-Improvement Sequence: Well-Being Before Self-Control
The typical narrative of self-improvement is familiar: become more disciplined, resist temptation, make better choices, and eventually, a better life will make you feel better. However, a groundbreaking paper published online in November 2025 challenges this assumed sequence. The research found that higher psychological well-being tends to predict stronger self-control later on, rather than the other way around. Notably, earlier self-control did not reliably forecast later well-being in the same studies.
It’s important to clarify that I am a writer interpreting a single longitudinal study, not a clinician offering psychological advice. The findings do not claim that deliberately boosting well-being will necessarily cause improvements in self-control, but they do invite us to reconsider the directional dynamics between these two important qualities.
Two Diverse Groups Tracked Over Time
The research, conducted by Shuna Shiann Khoo and colleagues, appeared in Social Psychological and Personality Science. It involved two three-wave longitudinal studies spanning different cultures and time frames, allowing for a robust cross-cultural examination.
Study 1 tracked 377 working adults from an Asian country with surveys spaced six months apart, covering a total of one year. Study 2 followed 1,299 working adults in the United States, who completed three monthly surveys. This design meant the predictive timeframe was six months in the Asian sample and one month in the American sample.
Self-control was assessed through a 20-item questionnaire addressing three broad regulatory functions: inhibiting unwanted impulses, initiating beneficial actions without delay, and maintaining consistent behavior. Measures of well-being varied: the Asian sample’s questionnaire included happiness, self-worth, and appreciation of life, while the U.S. sample’s assessed positive feelings such as optimism, energy, and happiness.
All measures were self-reported, focusing on how adults perceived their own functioning and well-being rather than objective external indicators like finances or task completion.
Distinguishing Between-Person and Within-Person Effects
At each time point, self-control and well-being were positively correlated—people who saw themselves as more self-controlled generally reported better psychological well-being. Yet, this correlation alone does not clarify causality or temporal direction.
Crucially, the study separated two different questions: first, whether people who habitually have higher self-control also tend to have higher well-being compared to others (a between-person comparison); and second, whether fluctuations in an individual’s well-being predict changes in their self-control over time (a within-person analysis).
To achieve this separation, the researchers employed a random-intercept cross-lagged panel model. This advanced statistical technique accounts for stable individual differences, addressing concerns raised by Ellen Hamaker et al. in their 2015 methodological paper (doi.org/10.1037/a0038889) about conventional models conflating between-person differences with within-person changes.
After isolating stable person-level associations, the results showed that earlier psychological well-being positively predicted later self-control at both six-month and one-month intervals. Conversely, the path from earlier self-control to later well-being was not statistically supported.
While this is just one study and not a settled consensus, its main contribution lies in demonstrating that associations observed between different people can tell a different story when examining changes within the same individuals over time.
“Did Not Predict” Is Not the Same as “No Effect”
The study’s findings should be interpreted with statistical precision. The absence of evidence for self-control predicting later well-being applies only within the specific questionnaires, timeframes, samples, and models used. It does not prove that self-control can never influence future well-being.
This research was observational, not experimental. The researchers did not manipulate psychological well-being or self-control to observe causal effects. While repeated measurements provide stronger temporal ordering than a single survey, external factors like changes in work, relationships, health, or stress could still influence both variables simultaneously. Thus, cross-lagged associations are compatible with causation but do not establish it definitively.
Time intervals also matter. Relationships between well-being and self-control might operate over days, years, or around specific life events, not necessarily in smooth monthly or six-month cycles. Self-control could influence particular aspects of well-being indirectly—for example, by improving relationships or helping complete valued tasks—without causing detectable changes in broad well-being questionnaires at the next measurement.
Therefore, the safest conclusion is nuanced and asymmetric: these two datasets repeatedly supported psychological well-being as an earlier predictor of self-control but did not find comparable evidence for the reverse direction.
Contextualizing Within Existing Research on Self-Control
This new finding adds to a rich literature linking self-control and well-being. In a 2024 review, Denise de Ridder of Utrecht University described a robust but moderate association between trait self-control and life satisfaction, positive affect, and a sense of meaning. The review also highlighted that much evidence comes from cross-sectional studies, where between-person associations often appear stronger than within-person effects.
For example, a well-known study by Angela Duckworth and Martin Seligman showed that self-discipline predicted eighth-graders’ final grades more reliably than IQ (read more here). However, this concerned academic performance rather than psychological well-being.
Additional research by Brian Galla and Duckworth demonstrated that beneficial habits partly mediate the relationship between trait self-control and outcomes like studying, exercise, and sleep across 2,274 participants in six studies (PMC4731333).
These studies complement rather than contradict Khoo’s findings. While one set of research explores how self-controlled people manage behavior, Khoo’s study investigates which trait tends to precede changes in the other. Together, they suggest that self-control is less a single, heroic mental muscle and more a capacity influenced by habits, circumstances, and psychological state.
Feeling Well May Provide the Capacity to Function Well
The precise mechanism linking well-being to later self-control remains an open question. Khoo and colleagues propose that positive emotions may broaden attention and build psychological resources, enabling individuals who feel energetic, optimistic, and appreciative of life to initiate unpleasant tasks, persist through challenges, or resist impulses more effectively.
This interpretation is plausible but not directly tested in these studies. The questionnaires cannot reveal whether positive emotions improve cognitive flexibility, whether better life circumstances simultaneously enhance both well-being and self-control, whether people rate their own behavior more generously when feeling well, or if another process connects the two.
Complementing this, an intensive longitudinal study by Johanna Schmid and colleagues tracked 64 university students over multiple nine-day bursts, collecting 1,459 evening reports. They found that self-control fluctuated significantly day-to-day and was associated with better subjective well-being on higher self-control days (doi.org/10.1111/aphw.12482). Although this small study did not settle causation, it reinforces that self-control is not a fixed trait but varies over time.
For many, this research shifts the narrative away from heroic self-control as a standalone virtue toward understanding it as a capacity shaped by available energy, stability, and supportive structures at any given moment.
A Caution Against Turning Findings Into New Pressures
The temptation might be to translate these findings into optimization advice: prioritize well-being first, and discipline will follow. However, this oversimplifies an observational study and risks creating another demand on individuals.
Psychological well-being is not a simple switch people can always choose to turn on. Factors like work commitments, caregiving responsibilities, financial security, physical health, relationships, and living conditions all influence how much space one has to feel well and regulate behavior. These influences were neither manipulated nor fully isolated in the study.
The study also does not claim that commitments, habits, or self-control are unimportant. Instead, it found that increases in self-control did not reliably predict later increases in broad psychological well-being, while increases in well-being did predict later self-control improvements. This nuanced finding should narrow, not inflate, claims about self-control’s effects.
Most importantly, the moral framing of self-control needs reconsideration. Difficulty starting, persisting, or resisting does not necessarily indicate a flawed character. Across two culturally diverse samples, self-control appeared partly as a resource that became more accessible when individuals were feeling and functioning better.
Traditionally, well-being is framed as a prize earned through discipline. This study suggests that, at least sometimes, well-being may be part of the foundation from which disciplined action grows.
