The Real Impact of Short-Form Video on Attention and Mental Health

You open the app to check one thing. Forty minutes later, you surface, slightly dazed, unable to say what you watched. This familiar experience has sparked a widely shared suspicion that habitual scrolling may be eroding our attention spans—a sentiment often expressed with humor, but increasingly grounded in concern.

A recent meta-analysis by a research team at Griffith University in Australia offers one of the most comprehensive looks yet at this phenomenon. Published in Psychological Bulletin by Nguyen and colleagues (2025), the study reviewed 71 studies involving 98,299 participants, pooling results from 70 of these. Their findings revealed that heavier use of short-form video platforms like TikTok and Douyin is moderately correlated with poorer cognitive function, especially in areas related to attention and self-control. However, a crucial insight emerged: how compulsively people use these platforms matters far more than the sheer amount of time spent scrolling.

Understanding the Data Behind the Headlines

The Griffith team meticulously gathered all quantitative research examining short-form video consumption and its links to cognition and mental health. Notably, no studies specifically assessed Instagram Reels, Facebook Reels, or YouTube Shorts. The research protocol was preregistered, and the dataset is openly accessible via the Open Science Framework, reinforcing transparency and reproducibility.

Among the 14 studies that evaluated cognition, most relied on self-reported measures of attention and self-control rather than laboratory-based cognitive tests. The overall correlation between heavier short-form video use and cognition was r = −.34, a moderate effect where .10 is considered weak and .50 strong. Attention (−.38) and inhibitory control (−.41)—the ability to suppress impulsive reactions—showed the strongest negative associations. Other cognitive domains like memory, language, and working memory had weaker links, while reasoning ability showed no significant association, though it was only assessed in one study.

Regarding mental health, the 61 studies included painted a weaker but consistent picture: an overall correlation of −.21 linked heavier short-form video use to poorer mental health outcomes. Stress (−.34) and anxiety (−.33) were most strongly connected, followed by depression, loneliness, and sleep quality. These patterns held true across age groups, from young people to adults. Interestingly, platform differences mattered only for mental health, with general short-form video use showing somewhat stronger associations than TikTok-specific use, while platform choice did not impact cognitive outcomes.

Compulsion Over Duration: The Critical Factor

Delving deeper, the researchers found that how short-form video use was measured significantly influenced the strength of its association with cognition and mental health. Studies varied in their approach: some counted minutes watched, others tallied app openings, and about half employed “addiction-style” scales assessing loss of control, preoccupation, and interference with daily life.

Duration alone showed only a weak correlation with cognition (−.20) and an even weaker one with mental health (−.10). Frequency of app openings did not significantly link to mental health. However, addiction-style scores revealed stronger negative correlations: −.37 for cognition and −.32 for mental health.

This distinction matters. Someone who watches a long stretch of short videos on a Sunday afternoon but stops willingly represents a weaker signal for concern. In contrast, the individual who compulsively scrolls, unable to stop despite not enjoying the content, embodies the pattern linked to poorer cognitive and mental health outcomes. The authors emphasize that not all engagement is detrimental; rather, the nature and subjective experience of use—especially compulsivity—are key factors.

Counterintuitively, the study found no significant relationship between short-form video use and body image or self-esteem, challenging prevalent assumptions from a decade of social media commentary. Additionally, reasoning ability showed no link, further dispelling fears that these platforms broadly “make you stupid.”

Limitations and What the Science Can’t Confirm Yet

It’s important to recognize the limitations of this body of research. Approximately 87% of the studies were correlational and cross-sectional, capturing snapshots rather than causal dynamics. This means the data cannot confirm that scrolling causes weaker attention; it’s equally plausible that individuals with pre-existing attention difficulties or anxiety are drawn more deeply into these apps, which are designed to deliver rapid rewards and make leaving difficult.

The demographic skew of the samples is another consideration: nearly three-quarters of studies were conducted in Asia, with participants averaging 23 years old and 60% identifying as women. Furthermore, the addiction scales used measure problematic use on a continuum and do not equate to clinical diagnoses. The heterogeneity among studies was substantial, indicating variability in findings.

Another structural limitation is that only about 10% of studies controlled for general social media use, making it difficult to isolate the unique effects of short-form video from broader online behavior. Finally, the database search ended in October 2024, meaning the rapidly evolving landscape may have shifted since.

Experimental and longitudinal studies remain sparse. One cited example is a three-week trial by Hunt et al., where participants limiting social media use reported reduced depressive symptoms compared to a control group. However, specific evidence focused solely on short-form video is still emerging.

Practical Advice for Navigating the Endless Scroll

So, what should you take away from this on a typical Tuesday night? The study does not suggest you need to “delete the apps.” Instead, the crucial question is not how long you scroll, but how it feels to stop. If you can comfortably disengage when you choose, the evidence indicates minimal cause for concern. If, however, stopping feels impossible and the feed seems to control your attention, this pattern aligns with stronger associations to poorer cognition and mental health.

It’s wise to treat these platforms like any other designed environment optimized to hold your attention—acknowledging that they are built by professionals to be hard to leave. If you find yourself relying on scrolling as a primary way to manage escalating feelings of stress or depression, seeking support from a therapist or counselor is a more effective step than merely tracking screen time.

Ultimately, the feed knows how to keep you engaged, but it cannot perceive the cost to your well-being. As of now, neither can we—not definitively. The key metric isn’t the minutes spent but who controls when they end.
