Reflections on Five Years of Sustainable Gifting: Insights and Lessons Learned

When needi launched five years ago, sustainable gifting was still largely a niche concept. Many businesses expressed a desire to make more responsible choices, yet sustainability was often viewed as secondary to commercial priorities rather than fully integrated. Corporate gifting had developed a reputation for wastefulness, with branded merchandise frequently forgotten in drawers and generic gifts eliciting little more than a polite thank you.

At needi, we believed there had to be a better way. Our mission to help businesses create more meaningful gifting experiences has provided valuable insights into sustainability, human behaviour, and what truly resonates with recipients. In hindsight, some of our most significant lessons have been quite unexpected.

Thoughtfulness Over Price: The True Value of Gifting

One of the foremost lessons is that recipients care far more about thoughtfulness than about price. There’s a common misconception that impactful gifts require larger budgets, but our experience consistently shows the opposite. Many of the most memorable gifts we’ve facilitated were simple products sourced from small independent suppliers, thoughtfully chosen to reflect the recipient’s interests, values, or circumstances.

People remember feeling understood and appreciating the care behind a gift, rarely recalling its monetary value. This has important implications for sustainability: thoughtful gifting naturally reduces waste. When a person receives something they genuinely want or need, they are much more likely to use, keep, and value it, thereby extending the product’s life and reducing environmental impact.

The Personalisation of Sustainability

Five years ago, sustainability conversations primarily focused on environmental impact. While that remains crucial, today people increasingly care about the broader story behind the products they receive. They want transparency about who made the items, where they originated, and whether their purchase supports positive social or economic outcomes beyond the product itself.

Supporting local independent businesses, social enterprises, or founder-led brands often resonates as strongly as environmental credentials. Many companies we work with seek to align their gifting strategies with core values such as supporting small businesses, reducing waste, or sourcing responsibly. Sustainability has evolved beyond an environmental lens to encompass community, purpose, and social impact.

Convenience: The Hidden Key to Sustainable Choices

Another important insight is that convenience matters more than many acknowledge. While most employees and procurement teams want to make sustainable choices, they operate in fast-paced environments with multiple competing priorities. Expecting extensive research into suppliers and credentials is often unrealistic.

Organisations achieving notable progress are those simplifying sustainable choices—making responsible options accessible, affordable, and easy to implement. This approach fosters natural adoption and reduces friction, ultimately enabling more consistent sustainable purchasing decisions.

Authenticity: The Cornerstone of Trust in Sustainability

Perhaps the most surprising lesson is the growing importance of authenticity. Consumers and employees, especially younger generations entering the workforce, are increasingly adept at distinguishing genuine sustainability efforts from performative actions. They demand substance—real, consistent actions reflecting corporate values rather than mere marketing or superficial claims.

Companies that stand out are often those making steady, authentic decisions aligned with their principles, even when unobserved. According to a 2022 Edelman Trust Barometer report, 65% of employees want their employers to take a stand on social and environmental issues, underscoring the importance of authenticity in building trust.

Sustainable Gifting as a Catalyst for Positive Business Impact

Sustainable gifting has reaffirmed a core belief at needi: business can be a force for good when purchasing decisions are made intentionally. Every gift presents an opportunity—to support local entrepreneurs, help small independent brands grow, reduce waste, or create meaningful connections between people. While individual decisions may seem small, collectively they generate significant positive impact.

After five years, it’s clear that sustainability is not about perfection. Businesses don’t need to get everything right immediately or have unlimited budgets to make a difference. Progress stems from consistently making better choices over time—choosing products recipients genuinely want, supporting aligned suppliers, and minimizing waste wherever possible. Thoughtful consumption isn’t revolutionary on its own, but together these actions contribute to a more sustainable and responsible way of doing business.

The Power of Everyday Decisions

Ultimately, sustainable gifting teaches us that meaningful change rarely arises from grand gestures. Instead, it emerges from thousands of everyday decisions that, cumulatively, lead to something much bigger. This perspective encourages businesses to focus on consistent, intentional choices that reinforce their values and create lasting impact.
