Chili’s Strategic Focus on Core Technology Over AI
In an era where artificial intelligence (AI) is often heralded as the silver bullet for operational efficiency, Chili’s parent company, Brinker International, is taking a different approach. Rather than aggressively pursuing AI implementations, Brinker is prioritizing foundational technology upgrades to enhance both customer and employee experiences. This deliberate strategy reflects a commitment to strengthening the company’s basic infrastructure before layering on more complex innovations.
Chris Caldwell, Chief Information Officer (CIO) of Brinker International, recently emphasized this approach in an interview with The Wall Street Journal. With nearly three decades of experience in restaurant technology, Caldwell explained that Chili’s is “not all in” on AI at this stage. Instead, his focus over the past two years has been on rectifying fundamental issues that were hindering performance across the chain’s 1,200 locations. These improvements include expanding reliable Wi-Fi, upgrading payment systems, and equipping staff with new devices such as tablets and laptops to streamline service delivery.
Investing in the Basics: The Foundation for Growth
When Caldwell joined Chili’s in February 2024, he identified critical gaps in the company’s technological backbone. Outdated ordering software, unstable Wi-Fi, and overloaded desktop systems were creating bottlenecks that frustrated employees and customers alike. Addressing these challenges became the starting point for the company’s turnaround.
One of the largest initiatives involved upgrading Wi-Fi connectivity across all Chili’s locations. Over two years, Brinker renegotiated its Comcast contract, installed new network lines where connectivity was weak, and added cellular backups to ensure uninterrupted service. Although Caldwell has not publicly disclosed the total cost of this project, it was completed earlier this year and laid the groundwork for further enhancements.
Following the network overhaul, Caldwell equipped each store manager with a new laptop to replace the previously shared and overburdened desktops. Additionally, 23,000 new iPads were distributed to frontline staff, replacing older tablets that struggled with battery life and reliability during shifts. These upgrades directly support faster, more efficient order processing and improved guest interactions.
Cutting Back on Flashy Tech to Enhance Guest Experience
Caldwell has also taken a pragmatic stance on emerging technologies that have not proven their value. For example, Chili’s paused its pilot program involving robot servers, describing them as “flashy but ultimately pointless” when they interfere with delivering a superior guest experience. Similarly, the company is cautious about generative AI applications, ensuring that any new technology initiatives align with the core mission of enhancing food service and atmosphere.
“If a robot’s getting in the way and not helping us deliver a great guest experience, we’re going to get rid of them,” Caldwell stated, underscoring the company’s customer-centric philosophy.
Results Reflect Strategic Patience and Focus
Brinker International’s methodical investments in foundational technology have coincided with significant business improvements. According to the company’s third-quarter fiscal 2026 report ending March 25, Chili’s restaurant sales rose by 4% compared to the same period the previous year, with total company sales increasing from $1.41 billion to $1.46 billion. This growth supports a remarkable stock price increase of over 500% since June 2022, as noted by Sara Senatore, a senior restaurant analyst at Bank of America.
Moreover, the company is celebrating 20 consecutive quarters of same-store sales growth—a testament to the positive impact of its back-to-basics strategy. By focusing on reliable, practical technology upgrades, Chili’s is creating the conditions for sustained operational success and customer satisfaction.
For businesses considering the rush toward AI adoption, Chili’s example offers valuable insight: foundational technology investments can be a powerful catalyst for growth and efficiency. By strengthening the basics first, Brinker International is positioning itself for future innovation while ensuring current operations run smoothly and effectively.
