The Power of Understanding Motivation in the Workplace

As we enter a new year, it’s the perfect time to reflect on what drives us and keeps us motivated in our work. Understanding our own motivations can lead to increased satisfaction and productivity, benefiting both ourselves and our teams. This was the mindset of the co-founders of Polpeo, who enlisted the help of Sally Henderson to delve into the motivational maps of their team members.

Having previously undergone a motivational assessment herself, one of the co-founders recognized the value in uncovering what truly motivates individuals. This knowledge can provide insight into what drives us, whether we are fulfilling those motivations, and how they may have evolved over time.

The Impact of Knowing Your Motivations

One of the most enlightening aspects of this exercise was the unexpected revelations that emerged. By identifying common motivators within a team, it can foster unity and understanding among members. Additionally, individuals may discover that certain aspects of their work are more important to them than they had realized.

For example, if someone’s primary motivator is creativity but they find themselves bogged down in administrative tasks, their motivation may suffer. Similarly, individuals who value stability may struggle in times of uncertainty or change. Recognizing these preferences can help teams support each other and adapt to each other’s needs.

For the co-founder settling into a full-time role at Polpeo, the motivation training has proven invaluable. Despite stability being a key factor for all employees, it was revealed that both co-founders actually ranked it lowest on their list of motivators. This discrepancy highlighted the unique perspectives and motivations of each team member, leading to a more nuanced understanding of how to best support and empower each individual.

By aligning roles and responsibilities with employees’ motivations, the team at Polpeo has cultivated a more fulfilling and productive work environment. This personalized approach not only enhances job satisfaction but also enables employees to perform at their best.

Ultimately, understanding what motivates us and our team members is key to fostering a positive and supportive workplace culture. By prioritizing open communication and empathy, organizations can create an environment where individuals feel valued, motivated, and empowered to succeed.
