How UK small businesses can use AI with confidence

Date:

The Role of Artificial Intelligence in Small Businesses

Throughout history, technology has been a significant driver of evolution, transforming inefficiencies into efficiencies and fostering growth. Of late, artificial intelligence (AI) has emerged as a key player in this conversation. Our recent survey of 300 small businesses reveals that 58% of respondents are comfortable using AI, and 65% believe that it will play a central or important role in their operations in the next two years. Currently, AI is gaining momentum in data-centric areas such as marketing and content creation (34%), bookkeeping and accounting (33%), financial planning and analysis (23%), and product and service development (23%). However, the path to adoption isn’t without obstacles.

Challenges in AI Adoption

Like any rapidly evolving technology, AI’s implementation doesn’t always keep pace with the hype, making the adoption levels variable. Concerns about data privacy and security (37%), job displacement (35%), and accuracy and reliability (30%) are foremost in people’s minds, creating a barrier to AI adoption.

Bridging the Gap with AI

To reconcile AI’s potential with these concerns, businesses need to look beyond the obvious use cases and identify where AI can be thoughtfully applied to solve specific problems or areas of friction. For instance, AI can be used to automate repetitive tasks such as drafting emails, categorising expenses, or chasing overdue invoices. Employing AI in these areas, even on a trial basis, can demonstrate its potential to make work easier and more efficient.

Building Trust in AI Through Reliable Tools

Concerns about AI adoption, particularly in sensitive areas like finance, payroll, or customer data, are valid and deserve attention. The tools that are used for AI implementation must be secure, transparent, and come from a trusted source. AI tools with a strong track record in data security, which are transparent about their use of AI and provide human checks and balances, will be crucial in building trust and confidence.

Turning Potential into Progress with AI

Businesses that have successfully integrated AI into their operations view it as an augmentation of human ingenuity rather than a replacement. Interestingly, AI can significantly boost productivity in one of the most inherently human aspects of entrepreneurship – idea generation. AI can increase creative capacity in small teams and help them overcome challenges, with approximately one in five (17%) respondents saying it makes initiating tasks easier.

The AI Advantage for Small Businesses

A common misconception is that AI is a one-size-fits-all solution that needs to be implemented all at once. However, the real value of AI lies in the incremental, practical steps that improve daily business operations. Our research shows a strong correlation between AI adoption and revenue growth, with a third of the small businesses that are confident in their use of AI reporting an increase in revenue.

While AI is not a panacea for all business challenges, and not all tasks need to be automated, it can provide a significant advantage when applied thoughtfully and with purpose. By leveraging AI, businesses have the opportunity to work smarter, grow faster, and devote more time to their passion.
