Canva Is Giving Laid-Off Employees ‘Generous’ Perks

Canva’s Strategic Restructuring: Support and Generosity Amid Workforce Changes

Canva, the graphic design platform founded in 2013, is currently navigating a significant restructuring that will affect approximately 1,271 employees—around 22% of its global workforce. This shift involves layoffs, role changes, and relocations, marking a pivotal moment for the company after experiencing its slowest growth in a decade.

The announcement came directly from Canva’s co-founder and CEO, Melanie Perkins, who described the last year as the company’s “hardest year yet.” In her employee memo, Perkins explained that minor adjustments would no longer suffice to sustain Canva’s future success. Instead, the company is “refounding” itself by returning to small, empowered teams designed to drive innovation and resilience over the next ten years.

This restructuring reflects broader industry trends where tech companies are recalibrating operations in response to market shifts and economic pressures. However, Canva’s approach stands out for its emphasis on empathy and employee support during the transition.

Generous Severance and Continued Support

Unlike many typical layoffs, Canva is offering affected employees at least six months of pay, irrespective of their location. In a move that underscores the company’s commitment to fairness, all departing workers will retain their equity in Canva, regardless of how long they have been with the firm—a notable deviation from the usual one-year vesting rule.

Moreover, Canva extends healthcare coverage for 12 months in countries where it is provided, alongside a full year of access to its employee assistance program, Canva Care, available to employees and their families. These benefits set a high standard in severance practices, aligning with increasing calls for more compassionate corporate transitions.

Career Coaching and Job Transition Assistance

Recognizing the challenges employees face when job searching after a layoff, Canva is offering comprehensive career support. This includes individual coaching sessions, interview preparation, and a full year of LinkedIn Premium to enhance networking and job search capabilities. Importantly, Canva is redeploying a significant portion of its recruiting team to assist former employees with resume reviews and mock interviews.

To further aid in job placement, Canva allows outgoing employees to join an alumni talent directory accessible to investors, partners, and industry contacts. This initiative fosters connections and opportunities within the larger professional community. Additionally, departing employees can keep their company-issued MacBooks, acknowledging that not all have personal laptops at home.

Entrepreneurial Support Through the Canva Collective Fund

Beyond traditional severance, Canva is investing in entrepreneurship by launching the Canva Collective Fund. This program offers $10,000 grants to departing employees interested in starting their own businesses or community projects. Notably, Canva will not claim any ownership stake in ventures funded through this initiative, empowering former staff to pursue new paths independently. Employees have until December 14 to express interest in this opportunity.

Industry Recognition and Broader Implications

Canva’s handling of its workforce reduction has drawn praise from industry leaders. Jasveer Singh, co-founder and CEO of KnotDating, described the company’s layoff announcement as “a master class” in transparency and generosity during a Newsweek interview. This acknowledgment highlights Canva’s reputation for thoughtful and honest communication despite difficult circumstances.

Greg Simpson, head of global career transition at talent advisory firm LHH, noted that Canva’s comprehensive support package reflects a growing trend where companies prioritize career transition assistance to mitigate the impact of layoffs. Such strategies not only help employees but also preserve employer brand integrity and trust.

As companies continue to face economic uncertainties, Canva’s example demonstrates how restructuring can be managed with compassion, strategic foresight, and an emphasis on employee well-being.
