Re:Build Secures $2.1 Billion to Bolster American Manufacturing and Industrial Innovation

Re:Build, a Massachusetts-based manufacturing accelerator renowned for spinning out electric vehicle startup Slate Auto in 2023, has successfully raised $2.1 billion in a recent funding round. This significant capital injection is aimed at expanding Re:Build’s capabilities to produce hard technology products and launch new industrial startups, reinforcing its mission to ensure that innovative products continue to be made in America for generations to come.

The investment round was led by prominent firms General Catalyst and JPMorgan Chase’s Strategic Investment Group, though details about other investors remain undisclosed. The funding arrives amid heightened focus on revitalizing U.S. manufacturing and supply chains, a strategic move to reduce reliance on China and strengthen domestic economic and national security.

A Strategic Vision Rooted in National Security and Economic Renewal

Jeff Wilke, Re:Build’s co-founder and former Amazon commercial CEO, articulated the company’s foundational motivation, stating, “We started Re:Build because the deindustrialization of America is an economic failure and national security risk.” He emphasized that the new capital will accelerate Re:Build’s growth, allowing it to build a robust manufacturing business and platform for American industrial leadership. Wilke highlighted that the ecosystem of products and companies emerging from Re:Build proves the potential to restore America’s industrial might.

Echoing Wilke’s sentiments, General Catalyst CEO Hemant Taneja remarked, “General Catalyst has long believed that rebuilding American industrial capacity is one of the most important economic and national security imperatives of our time.” Taneja further stressed the need for scalable platform companies and a revitalized innovation ecosystem skilled in hardware manufacturing to compete effectively with China and revitalize American towns and jobs left behind by decades of deindustrialization.

Re:Build: America’s Answer to Shenzhen with Strong Amazon Roots

Founded in 2020, Re:Build positions itself as “America’s answer to Shenzhen,” the Chinese manufacturing powerhouse. The company’s leadership team includes individuals with deep ties to Amazon, including co-founder Jeff Wilke and Wei Gao, a former Amazon vice president and technical adviser to Jeff Bezos, who serves as Re:Build’s chief digital and product officer. Several other executives within Re:Build also bring experience from Amazon’s vast operational and technological expertise.

Over its six years of operation, Re:Build claims to have launched hundreds of products and production systems, leveraging a dual operational model. It partners with industrial companies to design, engineer, and manufacture products at scale for sectors such as aerospace and defense, while simultaneously incubating startups focused on critical and underserved markets. This approach has allowed Re:Build to build a diverse manufacturing ecosystem, employing over 2,100 people across the United States and managing more than 2.4 million square feet of manufacturing capacity.

Slate Auto: Spinning Out to Drive Innovation in Electric Vehicles

One of Re:Build’s most notable spinouts is Slate Auto, conceptualized by Wilke and co-founder Miles Arnone in 2022. To attract greater investment and accelerate growth, Slate Auto was spun out as an independent company. Since then, it has raised at least $1.4 billion, including backing from Jeff Bezos’ family office. Slate Auto’s vision centers on creating an ultra-low-cost, minimalist electric pickup truck that customers can customize according to their preferences, aiming to disrupt the EV market with affordability and flexibility.

This strategic spinout exemplifies Re:Build’s commitment to fostering industrial startups that address unmet market needs while leveraging America’s manufacturing capabilities.

Re:Build’s recent funding milestone underscores a broader economic and geopolitical trend—renewed investment in domestic manufacturing as a pillar of national security and economic resilience. As the company scales its operations and incubates new ventures, it stands at the forefront of America’s industrial renaissance.
