Colossal Biosciences Unveils AI Platform to Propel De-Extinction Science

Colossal Biosciences announced Wednesday the launch of a groundbreaking artificial intelligence platform designed to accelerate its ambitious efforts to revive extinct species. This exclusive report by TechCrunch highlights the company’s latest innovation, GenoMorph, which leverages cutting-edge 3D morphology, comparative genomics, and developmental biology to pinpoint crucial genetic edits necessary for de-extinction projects—especially when limited genetic data is available.

One of the most compelling applications of GenoMorph is in Colossal’s attempt to bring back the dodo bird, a species with scarce genomic resources. While the company has access to around 100 woolly mammoth genomes due to better DNA preservation in cold climates, the dodo genome data is significantly more constrained, with only a single genome available. This genomic scarcity poses a unique challenge that GenoMorph aims to overcome.

Innovative Approach to Limited Ancient DNA

“Normally, scientists can compare many genomes to understand which genetic differences are responsible for certain traits,” explained Colossal CEO and co-founder Ben Lamm in an interview with TechCrunch. “We don’t have that luxury with ancient DNA from extinct species whose DNA is severely limited, and we can only get a small number of complete genomes.”

To address this gap, Colossal compiled extensive developmental data from living bird species closely related to the dodo, such as chickens, quail, ducks, and pigeons. This data was integrated with genetic information and 3D skull measurements from over 70 bird species, culminating in the GenoMorph platform after more than a year of dedicated research. This AI-driven system identifies DNA regions active in the development of beaks and facial structures, using this insight to predict which genetic “switches” likely contributed to the dodo’s distinctive appearance.

Lamm metaphorically described GenoMorph as a “treasure map for the dodo genome,” a tool that narrows down thousands of potential genetic differences to those most likely responsible for the species’ unique traits. To date, the platform has identified approximately 2,300 promising DNA editing targets related to dodo cranial and facial morphology, which the team plans to test experimentally.

Bridging Genetic Data and Laboratory Validation

One of the critical bottlenecks in de-extinction research is confirming which genetic changes truly cause the physical traits that define extinct species. Colossal has innovatively developed a system utilizing lipid nanoparticles to deliver gene-editing tools directly into developing bird embryos. This approach allows scientists to observe the developmental impacts of specific genetic edits without the lengthy process of breeding birds to maturity.

In parallel with GenoMorph’s progress, the company recently expanded its Nicobar pigeon colony—the dodo’s closest living relative—to 36 birds. Furthermore, Colossal has successfully created the essential reproductive cells, eggs and sperm, marking a significant milestone in its strategy to engineer birds expressing dodo-like traits.

“What’s most exciting is that we’re reaching a point where the different technologies we’ve been developing are starting to converge together and help other projects we are working on in a completely different part of the tree of life,” Lamm added, emphasizing the broader implications of their work beyond the dodo.

Ensuring Precision and Safety in Genetic Engineering

Addressing concerns about the safety of gene editing, Lamm stressed that GenoMorph’s primary goal is to enhance the precision, control, and testability of genetic engineering. The platform itself does not edit genes but aids the scientific team in identifying the most promising genetic changes for further investigation.

“Identifying a potential edit doesn’t mean we immediately introduce it into an animal or assume it’s safe,” Lamm noted. “The more precisely we can identify and validate these changes, the more informed our decisions become throughout the process.” This rigorous approach aligns with best practices in biotechnology, emphasizing careful validation and ethical responsibility.

Industry Confidence and Future Prospects

Colossal Biosciences’ latest technological advancement has garnered significant support from notable figures in the science and investment communities. Peter Diamandis, founder of the XPRIZE Foundation and an investor in Colossal, announced the creation of NeoGenesis Capital—a new venture capital firm dedicated to backing companies utilizing Colossal’s programmable biology platform across sectors including health, agriculture, and conservation.

This endorsement not only underscores the growing interest in programmable biology but also highlights Colossal’s leadership and pioneering expertise in de-extinction and synthetic biology.

Colossal Biosciences’ GenoMorph represents a significant leap forward in the complex challenge of resurrecting extinct species. By combining AI with deep biological insight and innovative delivery methods, the company is forging a path that could redefine conservation biology and genetic engineering. As the team moves toward laboratory validation of GenoMorph’s predictions, the scientific community and the public alike watch closely, hopeful for breakthroughs that balance innovation with responsibility.
