Hackers Just Took Down Freezers at 400 French Supermarkets

Unprecedented Cyberattack Disrupts French Supermarkets’ Refrigeration Systems

Hackers typically target sensitive information such as personal or corporate data, but a recent cyberattack in France took an unusual direction by hitting the nation’s frozen food supply. Over 400 supermarkets across the country experienced disruptions to their refrigeration systems, forcing many to discard perishable goods, according to a report by The New York Times. This attack notably targeted the cooling infrastructure of prominent supermarket chains, including Intermarché, Netto, Coopérative U, and Monoprix.

According to France’s National Cybersecurity Agency, the attackers exploited vulnerabilities in the systems of three companies responsible for remotely managing refrigeration units. This breach led to widespread refrigeration failures, affecting approximately 300 Intermarché and Netto stores, 80 Coopérative U locations, and 30 Monoprix outlets. The compromised systems forced grocers to dispose of large quantities of food, impacting both business operations and consumer supply.

Impact and Response from Industry Leaders

Despite the scale and severity of the incident, no group has yet claimed responsibility for the cyberattack, and investigations led by Paris prosecutors are ongoing to identify the perpetrators. Dominique Schelcher, head of the Coopérative U grocery chain, described the event as “unprecedented” and “extremely serious” in an interview with RTL radio. He emphasized the gravity of the attack by stating, “They’re attacking the French people’s food supply,” highlighting the direct threat to national food security.

Schelcher refrained from providing an exact estimate of the financial losses incurred but noted that refrigeration failures can cost small supermarkets tens of thousands of dollars. He remarked, “In my entire professional career, I’ve never seen anything like this,” underscoring the exceptional nature of this cyberattack within the retail and food distribution sector.

The Growing Threat of Cyberattacks on Critical Infrastructure

This incident in France draws attention to the evolving tactics of cybercriminals who are increasingly targeting critical infrastructure beyond traditional data theft. As refrigeration systems become more connected and remotely managed, their vulnerability to cyber threats rises, creating new risks for food safety and supply chains worldwide.

Cybersecurity experts warn that attacks like these could have cascading effects, disrupting not only businesses but also endangering public health and economic stability. Strengthening cybersecurity measures, particularly in the Internet of Things (IoT) devices that control essential services, is becoming an urgent priority.

For businesses and consumers alike, this event serves as a stark reminder of the need for robust cybersecurity protocols and proactive risk management strategies to safeguard vital infrastructure against increasingly sophisticated cyber threats.
