After Factory’s public spat with Khosla, Menlo proudly invests

Menlo Ventures Backs AI Startup Factory Amidst Industry Drama

Menlo Ventures partner Matt Murphy and his team announced Monday in a blog post that the firm has invested in AI coding startup Factory. While Menlo declined to disclose the exact investment amount, the funding was part of Factory’s latest round, which was announced last month at a $5 billion valuation. A source familiar with the deal indicated that Menlo’s investment was substantial and not merely symbolic, adding that the firm would have increased its stake if additional space had been available on the cap table.

Context: A Turbulent Week for Factory

Under normal circumstances, extending funding rounds to include new investors is a routine affair in the startup ecosystem. However, Factory has recently been involved in a high-profile controversy. Last week, Factory’s co-founder and CEO Matan Grinberg publicly accused investor Chris Degnan of RPT Partners—who had recently transitioned to become chief revenue officer at Factory’s competitor Cognition—of potentially sharing confidential information with Cognition. Grinberg announced he had terminated Degnan’s role as a board advisor amid these concerns.

This accusation sparked a fervent debate within the tech and venture capital communities, with prominent figures taking sides. The dispute escalated further when Vinod Khosla, whose venture firm invests in both Factory and Cognition, criticized Factory as a “struggling second tier competitor” and accused Grinberg of dishonesty regarding Degnan’s departure. Degnan himself contested Grinberg’s claims, stating that he resigned voluntarily and had declined a job offer from Grinberg.

Menlo Ventures’ Endorsement as a Vote of Confidence

Against this backdrop, Menlo Ventures’ investment and public support for Factory carry considerable weight. Murphy’s team praised Factory’s founders, technology, and customer relationships, signaling a strong belief in the company’s trajectory. This backing counters the narrative suggested by Khosla’s critique and reinforces Factory’s position as a serious contender in the AI software development space.

Matt Murphy is well-known for his prescient bet on Anthropic during its early days, a move that has paid off handsomely as Anthropic gained prominence alongside OpenAI. Menlo’s portfolio also includes successful investments in companies like Lovable and Legora, indicating a keen eye for promising AI ventures. Given this track record, some venture capitalists have started referring to Factory as “the next Anthropic,” highlighting high expectations for its potential.

Industry Reactions and Future Outlook

Sequoia Capital’s Shaun Maguire, another Factory investor who publicly supported Grinberg during last week’s dispute, expressed enthusiasm about Menlo’s endorsement, describing the firm as “on a tear.” Notably, Menlo Ventures has not invested in Cognition, Factory’s main competitor, which further underscores its commitment to Factory’s vision.

This episode highlights the complex dynamics and competitive tensions that can arise in the rapidly evolving artificial intelligence sector. Menlo’s deliberate and substantial investment serves not only as a financial boost but also as a strategic endorsement that may influence future investor sentiment and market positioning for Factory.
