Rethinking Digital Engagement: ScrollEd’s Innovative Approach to Learning

In an era where the term “doomscrolling” has become part of everyday vocabulary, society often laments the decline of our attention spans and the challenge of focusing on traditional learning methods like reading textbooks or studying for exams. The prevailing narrative tends to blame endless social media feeds for these distractions. However, a fresh perspective suggests that the problem might not be the act of scrolling itself, but rather what we are scrolling through.

This is the intriguing premise behind ScrollEd, a Palo Alto-based startup making waves at the TechCrunch Disrupt Startup Battlefield 200. ScrollEd proposes a transformative idea: if students aren’t opening textbooks, then textbooks should open themselves—by becoming scrollable, engaging content designed for today’s digital habits.

The ScrollEd Solution: From Static Text to Dynamic Feeds

ScrollEd has developed an app that converts any text file—including traditionally dry PDFs and textbooks—into a dynamic, scrollable feed reminiscent of popular platforms like Instagram Reels or TikTok. As users scroll, the content is presented through AI-generated videos, audio narration, text snippets, and interactive quizzes. Vertical swipes introduce new topics, while horizontal swipes dive deeper into the current subject, often culminating in a quiz to reinforce learning.

Utsav Gupta, co-founder of ScrollEd, shared insights with TechCrunch about their user-centric design approach: “The younger generation is increasingly going short form, vertical feed only (especially the 18 year olds we’ve spoken to!), and this poses challenges for any kind of media that requires depth. We want to meet them where they are…We just have to be deliberate about how we use it and choose not to maximize engagement on the platform.”

Gupta further emphasized the platform’s educational philosophy: “A short video can make you curious; following that curiosity can mean searching for another explanation or leaving the app. We wanted going deeper to be as easy as moving to the next video.” This approach aligns with cognitive science research suggesting that curiosity-driven learning increases retention and motivation.

Founders’ Vision Rooted in Experience and Expertise

ScrollEd was bootstrapped earlier this year by co-founders Utsav Gupta and Rebecca Neff, a couple both pursuing advanced studies—Gupta at Stanford in AI and human purpose, and Neff at the University of Pennsylvania in computer science. Their personal frustration with doomscrolling before bed inspired them to create a platform that leverages the addictive nature of scrolling for educational rather than purely recreational purposes.

Targeting educational institutions, corporate training programs, and individual learners seeking more meaningful digital content, ScrollEd operates on a freemium model. While users can access a free consumer feed, advanced features and institutional licenses come via paid subscriptions. Institutions benefit from detailed engagement reports, lesson progress tracking, and analytics that help tailor content delivery.

Looking Ahead: Building a Better Social Learning Network

In the coming months, ScrollEd plans to expand its lesson library, refine its source-checking processes to ensure content accuracy, and launch pilot programs with partner institutions. The company’s consumer launch is timed to coincide with TechCrunch Disrupt in October, where they aim to “disrupt” social media paradigms with a platform that prioritizes educational value over mindless engagement.

Moreover, ScrollEd is developing infrastructure to enable educators to assess individual learner progress and customize content accordingly, a feature that could significantly enhance personalized education. As Gupta succinctly puts it, “The ambition is a social network that’s better for you.”
