From Finance to Innovation: The Journey of Maria Cabral Menezes

Maria Cabral Menezes, 27, transitioned from a career in high-stakes finance to pioneering a novel solution in the laundry and apparel care industry. Formerly a global equities trader at JPMorgan Chase and Citadel, Menezes channeled her experience and insights into creating WashWise, a brand centered around its flagship product, the Reset Spray—a “dry shampoo for clothes.” This innovative product addresses a common yet overlooked problem: clothes that are worn once, too clean to wash but not fresh enough to wear confidently again.

Menezes’ background is rooted in behavioral economics, retailing, and international development, which she studied at the University of Pennsylvania. Her initial career path was conventional, aiming squarely at finance. However, practical challenges she faced while traveling and managing her wardrobe inspired her entrepreneurial pivot. The Reset Spray launched in early August and impressively reached $10,000 in sales in less than 36 hours, signaling strong market demand for a product designed to save time and reduce unnecessary washing.

Identifying a Unique Consumer Pain Point

While working as a trader and frequently traveling for conferences, Menezes noted the challenge of rewearing clothes, particularly blazers, without the confidence that they were fresh enough. The common scenario was a “chair robe”—a chair piled high with clothes worn once but not dirty enough for washing or dry cleaning, which can be costly and damaging to garments over time.

“I wish there was something like a dry shampoo, but for your clothes,” Menezes reflected, identifying the need for a product that allows consumers to refresh clothing between washes. This insight was the seed that grew into WashWise and its Reset Spray, a convenient and sustainable alternative to frequent laundering.

Developing the Reset Spray

Menezes began her product development journey by dissecting the functions of a washing machine to replicate its cleaning and deodorizing effects in a spray format. Collaborating remotely with a chemist she connected with via LinkedIn, Menezes experimented with formulations from her living room, iterating the product 10 to 15 times to achieve the desired balance of wrinkle reduction, odor neutralization, and fabric safety.

After more than a year of refinement and overcoming formulation challenges—such as combining effective odor neutralizers without compromising fragrance or wrinkle control—the product was ready for manufacturing. Menezes’ prior attempt at designing a water-soluble bag for sweaty clothes was abandoned after identifying practical flaws, illustrating her iterative and thoughtful approach to product innovation.

The Reset Spray is available in two fragrances and two sizes, including a travel-friendly option, and positions itself as a “dry clean in a bottle.” Beyond convenience, it promotes sustainability by reducing the environmental impact of excessive washing and dry cleaning, potentially saving consumers hundreds of dollars, hours of laundry time, and significant water usage.

Applying a Finance Mindset to Entrepreneurship

Menezes credits her finance background for her disciplined, process-oriented approach to building WashWise. The rigorous environment at Citadel instilled in her the importance of questioning every step, optimizing processes, and scaling thoughtfully—principles she applies in managing customer acquisition, product development, and operational efficiency.

Despite the demanding nature of finance, Menezes balanced her startup efforts alongside her job until the Reset Spray was production-ready, at which point she committed full-time to WashWise. She invested between $50,000 and $70,000 of personal savings before securing $1.2 million in funding from prominent investors, including Jack Abraham and Brian Tate. Notably, Menezes has not drawn a salary for over a year, choosing instead to reinvest in growth and team expansion.

Navigating the Shift from Finance to Startup Life

The transition from the quantitative world of public markets to the uncertainty of private company building required adaptation. Unlike finance, where outcomes are often measurable and immediate, startup decisions involve longer-term, less tangible metrics. Menezes describes this shift as a move towards greater intuition balanced by disciplined preparation.

Her approach combines rigorous process evaluation with the flexibility to make fast, confident decisions when unexpected challenges arise. This blend of structure and adaptability has been pivotal in managing WashWise’s growth and responding to market feedback.

Building Anticipation Through Transparency and Engagement

WashWise’s successful launch was preceded by a strategic focus on audience building via social media platforms like TikTok and Instagram. Rather than waiting to unveil a polished product, Menezes documented the company’s journey openly, sharing everything from packaging options to formulation tweaks. This transparency fostered a highly engaged community of early followers who felt invested in the product’s development.

By demystifying the startup process and candidly sharing setbacks through a TikTok series titled “Deglamorizing Founder Life,” Menezes cultivated trust and authenticity. This approach countered traditional PR advice but ultimately created demand and customer loyalty before the product even hit the market.

A Focused Strategy for Long-Term Success

Menezes emphasizes the importance of perfecting one product before expanding the brand’s portfolio, drawing parallels to Dyson’s methodical innovation model. WashWise aims to establish itself as an innovator in the laundry care space by embedding new consumer habits and vocabulary, such as “chair robe” and “dry shampoo for clothes.”

The Reset Spray’s early traction demonstrates the efficacy of this focused strategy, and Menezes is committed to continuing this path to create lasting impact in the home care market.
