In 1951, J. Lyons & Co operated hundreds of teashops across the UK, alongside bakeries, hotels, and food manufacturing facilities. Managing such a diverse operation required processing vast amounts of information related to orders, inventory, production schedules, deliveries, costs, and employee management.
To meet these challenges, the company developed the Lyons Electronic Office (LEO), the first computer designed expressly for business purposes. Initially, LEO calculated bakery costs but soon expanded its role to processing payroll, managing orders, planning production, and coordinating deliveries.
