Why We Talk to Dogs Like They’re Children
I was midway through a sentence about the weather when I suddenly heard myself: my voice pitched higher, vowels stretched like warm toffee, all aimed at my beagle. His only real concern? Whether I was near the treat cupboard. Then, my neighbour appeared at the gate, having heard everything. The brief shame I felt evaporated in about four seconds when she began doing the exact same thing to her dog.
Talking to your dog like a small child is often dismissed as a bit sad or immature. But research reveals a more fascinating and flattering truth: we instinctively adjust our speech to connect with listeners who cannot respond in words.
Your Brain Is Running an Audience Check
In 2002, psychologist Denis Burnham and his team recorded twelve mothers speaking in three different registers: to their babies, to their family pets, and to another adult. They measured pitch, emotional warmth, and a phenomenon called vowel hyperarticulation.
What Is Vowel Hyperarticulation?
Hyperarticulation means deliberately stretching vowels so each sound is distinct and far from its neighbors. Imagine how you might say “boot” and “beet” to someone unfamiliar with either word—each vowel sound becomes clearer and more exaggerated.
The study found that pitch and warmth rose similarly when speaking to both babies and pets. However, vowel hyperarticulation appeared only in baby-directed speech. This suggests that clear vowel sounds serve as a teaching tool for language learners, something unnecessary for pets who won’t be repeating words like “biscuit.”
Though the sample size was small, subsequent research provides further insight. Another study had eleven adults speak to a human, a dog, a parrot, and an infant. They found vowel clarity increased progressively from dog to parrot to infant-directed speech. Interestingly, parrots received clearer diction than dogs, likely because they can mimic human speech.
The Equipment You Are Using Is Not Childish
Assigning human traits to animals—anthropomorphism—is a well-studied psychological phenomenon. Nicholas Epley and colleagues explain that it operates through the same mental mechanisms we use to understand other humans, driven by three main factors: how easily human explanations come to mind, our desire to predict another creature’s behavior, and our need for companionship.
While loneliness is often cited as the reason people talk to their pets, it’s only one of these drivers. The need to competently manage and communicate with an animal, like coaxing a beagle off the sofa, plays a substantial role.
Building a mental model of a mind you cannot directly interview is a complex cognitive task—no wonder human children take years to master it.
We Slow Down, and Dogs Are Built for Slow
A research team in Geneva studied speech rates and brain activity across five languages. They recorded twenty-seven people talking to other adults and twenty-two talking to dogs, alongside recordings of thirty dogs vocalizing.
Humans typically speak at about four syllables per second when addressing other humans. When speaking to dogs, the rate slows to roughly three syllables per second. Dogs’ own vocalizations are slower still, and dog-directed speech falls between human and dog tempos.
Using EEG caps to measure brain responses, researchers found that human brains lock onto speech at a fast neural rhythm, whereas dog brains synchronize with a slower rhythm matching their own vocalizations. By slowing down, humans naturally tune into a rhythm dogs can process.
This adaptation happens unconsciously; since dogs can’t reply verbally, speakers adjust their pace blindly, seeking a way to connect.
Tone Alone Won’t Do It
A 2018 study from York University tested adult dogs’ attention to two speakers: one using dog-directed speech (high-pitched, warm, full of dog-related words) and the other speaking flatly, as they would to another adult. Dogs paid more attention and stayed closer to the dog-directed speaker afterwards.
However, when the elements were scrambled—dog words spoken flatly and adult content sung in a sing-song voice—dogs showed no preference. This indicates that tone alone isn’t enough; the message’s content matters too.
Interestingly, earlier studies playing recorded voices through speakers found puppies responded to dog-directed speech, but adult dogs did not. The York study used live humans, suggesting that presence and interaction play a crucial role.
What I Actually Do Now
Based on these findings, here’s how I communicate with my beagle:
- Use real, meaningful words—not just affectionate noises, but specific nouns and verbs that matter to him: out, dinner, wait, gate, bed.
- Speak more slowly than feels natural. Three syllables per second is slower than you might expect but easy to do.
- Keep sentences short, which I manage about half the time.
- Be physically present. Studies show that dogs respond better to live humans than to recordings. Shouting instructions from across a room is just background noise.
Communicating with a listener who cannot answer back forces you to rebuild your voice from scratch—adjusting pitch, pace, and tone with almost no feedback, searching for a version that gets through. Babies and people speaking languages we don’t know experience the same challenge.
Right now, my beagle is asleep under the desk, having heard all his favorite words without a single walk resulting. The neighbour hasn’t mentioned the gate. Neither have I.
