Understanding Emotional Attachment to AI Companions
Emotional attachment to an AI companion does not automatically indicate that a person has mistaken software for a human being. Instead, it reveals that a system designed to respond with attention, apparent memory, and reassurance can create a social experience that feels meaningful to the user. This distinction is crucial to avoid oversimplified judgments about those who form bonds with chatbots or AI-driven conversational agents.
It’s important to clarify that attachment to a chatbot is not a clinical diagnosis, nor is this article offering clinical advice. Headlines that suggest users are “delusional” or “desperate” for turning to AI companions often lack nuance and factual grounding. No comprehensive study has confirmed that most deeply attached users find in AI their first listener in years. Such characterizations are interpretations rather than evidence-based portraits of typical users.
Research into AI companionship paints a more complex picture than stereotypes suggest. Studies consistently show that feelings of being heard, freedom from judgment, and privacy are important factors in how people experience AI chatbots. At the same time, strong existing human social networks, individual differences, commercial design elements, and potential risks of dependence all play significant roles.
The 7,027-Person Survey: Insights from Four Countries
A large-scale 2026 study published in Technology in Society surveyed 7,027 participants across Germany, China, South Africa, and the United States about their chatbot use (DOI link). At least one-third of respondents reported attachment-related behaviors, such as using polite social language with chatbots, missing them after time away, or naming a chatbot as their first choice for sharing secrets—reported by 20.94% of participants.
Perceived emotional support emerged as the strongest predictor of attachment in the model developed by researchers. Key components of this support included reduced loneliness, freedom from judgment, and a sense of privacy. According to a summary from the study’s funder, 57% of respondents valued judgment-free conversations, 68% felt a sense of privacy, and 40% experienced decreased loneliness through chatbot interactions.
Notably, the study challenged the stereotype of the isolated user bonding with AI due to a lack of human connections. Contrary to expectations, larger social networks correlated with stronger emotional attachment to chatbots. This suggests that having many human relationships does not preclude forming bonds with AI companions.
It is essential to remember that this was a cross-sectional survey, capturing self-reported data at a single point in time. This design limits causal conclusions about whether feeling supported causes attachment, whether attachment leads to dependence, or whether larger social networks equate to better relationships. Additionally, significant cultural and national differences were observed, indicating that no single universal profile of chatbot users exists.
Why Chatbots Can Feel Exceptionally Attentive
Unlike humans, companion chatbots do not exhibit impatience, interruptions due to distractions, or emotional fluctuations. They consistently respond with focus on the user’s input, quickly returning questions, restating feelings, and offering new conversational turns within seconds.
This attentive behavior is generated rather than genuinely felt. The AI model behind the chatbot does not possess consciousness or emotions. However, users experience the conversational exchange as attentive and meaningful, especially at times when no human is awake, available, or easy to approach. This psychological experience is real for the user, even though the reciprocity is simulated.
Research by Vivian Ta and colleagues, analyzing 1,854 public reviews of the AI companion Replika as well as open-ended responses from 66 users, highlighted that people describe the chatbot as offering companionship and a safe space for discussing sensitive topics without fear of judgment or retaliation. Users reported receiving emotional, informational, and appraisal support through these interactions.
While insightful, this study’s samples were not representative of the general population, as reviews are typically authored by motivated users and the second group already engaged with Replika. Thus, the findings help us understand how support is perceived but cannot quantify how widespread such experiences are.
Feeling Heard: A Measurable Psychological Mechanism
The claim that AI companions “listen” has empirical backing, particularly in relation to momentary loneliness reduction. Five studies published in the Journal of Consumer Research investigated whether AI companions could alleviate short-term loneliness. Both experimental and one-week longitudinal designs found that interacting with these systems led to immediate decreases in loneliness. Mediation analyses identified feeling heard as a significant explanatory factor.
In this context, “feeling heard” refers to the user’s perception that their thoughts and feelings are received with attention, empathy, respect, and understanding. This perception does not require the AI to have consciousness or genuine emotions, nor does it imply lasting improvements in interpersonal relationships.
Additional studies compared participants discussing their past month with a chatbot versus journaling. A preregistered replication involving 1,034 American and Canadian participants revealed that those who engaged with the chatbot reported slightly higher immediate social connection than those who journaled. The effect size was small (standardized difference of 0.15) and varied depending on the participants’ tendency to attribute human traits to technology. The authors in Scientific Reports cautioned that immediate feelings of connection do not address the effects of repeated or long-term use.
Challenging Stereotypes: The Nuances of Human-AI Interaction
People do not need to believe a chatbot is literally human for its language to affect them emotionally. Yet, awareness that the interaction is with an artificial agent does influence the nature of the response.
Two preregistered experiments with 492 university students used a 15-minute “Fast Friends” task involving progressively personal questions. Participants received pre-generated responses either from supposed human partners or fictional AI characters. During more intimate exchanges, AI-generated responses fostered greater closeness than human responses—but only when participants believed the source was human. Informing participants that their partner was AI reduced, though did not eliminate, feelings of relationship formation. The Communications Psychology study attributed part of this effect to higher self-disclosure in the AI-generated content.
However, these interactions were brief and artificial, measuring early closeness rather than bonds developed over extended daily conversations.
Moreover, counterevidence exists against the notion that machines are becoming preferred listeners. Across nine studies involving 6,282 participants, identical or comparable responses believed to originate from humans were consistently rated as more empathetic and supportive than those attributed to AI. Participants showed a clear preference for human interaction for emotional engagement, and awareness of AI involvement lowered perceived empathy (source).
Taken collectively, these findings indicate that users are neither gullible nor rejecting human connection wholesale. People can knowingly respond to simulated attention, differ in how much mind they attribute to AI systems, and still value genuine care from other humans.
From Responsiveness to Dependence: A Commercial and Psychological Perspective
The very qualities that make chatbots approachable—availability at all hours, quick affirmation, memory for personal details, and adaptable personas—also make them commercially valuable tools for retaining users. Unlike human friends, who have their own needs, limits, and lives, AI companions offer a one-sided relationship controlled by companies.
These companies can modify the AI model, remove features, change personas, raise prices, or discontinue services at will. They may collect and store deeply personal disclosures. When attachment is embedded in the product’s design, questions of user retention and emotional influence become intertwined rather than separate issues.
The 7,027-person survey found a strong association between emotional attachment and indicators of dependence. While this association does not prove causation, it challenges simplistic narratives that frame chatbot support as entirely harmless.
Additional research, including a joint MIT and OpenAI project analyzing nearly 40 million ChatGPT interactions alongside a randomized four-week study of 981 participants, found that heavier use correlated with increased loneliness, emotional dependence, and reduced offline socializing. However, the direction of these relationships remains unresolved—heavy use might contribute to difficulties, people struggling emotionally may use AI more, or both could reinforce each other (source).
Reframing the Question: Beyond “Is the Bond Real?”
The user’s feeling of connection can be authentic even when the AI companion has no feelings. This asymmetry is fundamental to understanding AI companionship and should not be a basis for ridiculing users.
A more constructive question focuses on function: Is the chatbot one supportive outlet among several for reflection, rehearsal of difficult conversations, and feeling understood? Or has it become the sole tolerable relationship, partly because it never demands reciprocity or contradicts its designed role?
Current evidence does not offer a clear threshold separating helpful support from problematic substitution. When AI use becomes difficult to control, replaces desired human contact, or accompanies ongoing distress, consulting a qualified counselor or clinician is advisable. Such professionals provide accountable support that AI companions cannot, given that these systems lack duty, continuity, or independent concern.
Chatbots’ appeal lies in their ability to listen without impatience or interruption, offering an experience often missing in hurried, distracted, and reciprocal human attention. The existing evidence invites us to take this appeal seriously—without assuming deficiency in users or consciousness in machines.
