Netflix Shuts Down Gaming Studios 6 Weeks After Big Release

Netflix’s Strategic Shift: Shuttering Two Game Studios Amid Changing Priorities

Netflix recently announced the closure of two internal game development studios: Night School Studio, the creators behind the horror game Unhinged, and Moonloot, a Helsinki-based developer. This decision comes just six weeks after Night School released Unhinged, a narrative-driven title supported by notable filmmakers David Fincher and Zach Cregger. According to Variety, these closures mark another chapter in Netflix’s ongoing recalibration of its gaming division.

In a statement, a Netflix spokesperson expressed gratitude to the departing teams, saying, “We are incredibly grateful to the talented colleagues we’re saying goodbye to today. We thank them for all their contributions to Netflix, and wish them the best.” While the company has not publicly detailed the rationale behind these shutdowns, industry observers note that Netflix has been steadily downsizing its internal studios over the past few years.

Netflix’s Gaming Evolution and Recent Studio Closures

Netflix’s ambition to become a major player in the gaming space began with multiple studio acquisitions and investments, aiming to create exclusive gaming content to complement its massive streaming platform. However, the company has since shifted course, divesting some studios and trimming its internal development footprint. For instance, in December, Netflix returned Spry Fox to its original founders. It also closed Boss Fight Entertainment after the underwhelming performance of the Squid Game mobile game and shuttered Team Blue, a studio focused on AAA titles, earlier in 2024.

These moves reflect a broader reassessment of where Netflix can most effectively compete in gaming. Rather than maintaining a large roster of in-house developers, Netflix appears to be focusing on select strategic areas and partnerships that align better with its core strengths and audience preferences.

Current Gaming Strategy and Future Outlook

Today, Netflix retains Next Games — a studio known for its expertise in mobile and narrative-rich experiences — along with a team dedicated to collaborating with external developers. Under the leadership of games president Alain Tascan, Netflix’s gaming portfolio is now concentrated on four key categories: kids’ games, party games, narrative-driven titles such as Unhinged, and mainstream sports games like the recently launched FIFA World Cup: Launch Edition.

Insider sources cited by Variety reveal that Netflix’s internal enthusiasm is currently highest around cloud gaming technologies and children’s titles, areas that promise scalable engagement and alignment with the company’s global streaming audience. This strategic pivot suggests Netflix is prioritizing games that complement its video content and appeal to broader demographics rather than competing directly with established AAA game developers.

As Netflix continues to refine its gaming ambitions, its approach underscores the challenges tech giants face when expanding into the competitive and rapidly evolving gaming industry. The company’s willingness to pivot — closing studios and reallocating resources — reflects a pragmatic recognition of market realities and user preferences.
