Revolutionizing Energy Storage with Reversible Rusting

In traditional science lessons, rust is often seen as a nuisance—iron corroding due to its reaction with water and air. However, Form Energy, an innovative tech startup, is transforming this familiar chemical reaction into a groundbreaking clean energy solution. The company has coined the term “reversible rusting” to describe their proprietary process, where iron oxidizes to form rust during battery discharge and then reverts back to iron during recharge. This pioneering approach promises to redefine how we think about energy storage and grid resilience.

According to the Wall Street Journal, Form Energy recently secured $750 million in funding, pushing their total capital raised beyond $2 billion. This substantial investment reflects growing confidence in their technology’s potential to address long-standing challenges in the energy sector.

Long-Duration Energy Storage: Beyond Lithium-Ion Limitations

While lithium-ion batteries have dominated the energy storage market, they typically provide power for only a few hours—sufficient for short-term needs but inadequate for prolonged outages or emergencies. Form Energy’s rust-based batteries, in contrast, can deliver continuous power for up to 100 hours. This extended duration capability is a game changer for utilities facing multi-day grid emergencies, such as severe winter storms, where prolonged backup power is essential.

The durability of these batteries surpasses even the metaphorically tireless Energizer Bunny, offering a practical solution to keep critical infrastructure running when traditional energy sources falter.

Scaling Up Production and Commercial Deployment

Form Energy is channeling the new capital into expanding manufacturing capabilities at its facility in Weirton, West Virginia. Alongside production scale-up, the company is advancing its first commercial projects, notably a 300-megawatt installation in partnership with utility Xcel Energy. This project will support a Google data center in Minnesota, demonstrating the battery’s role in powering energy-intensive, modern digital infrastructure.

The surge in demand for these batteries is partly driven by the rapid expansion of AI data centers, which place unprecedented strain on power grids. As noted in Entrepreneur, Form Energy’s pipeline of projects has quadrupled this year—from 20 to 80 gigawatt-hours—highlighting the urgent need for reliable, long-duration energy storage solutions.

By leveraging a chemistry as old as rust but applying it in a new, reversible way, Form Energy exemplifies how innovation can unlock sustainable energy futures. Their approach aligns with the global push for clean energy technologies that enhance grid stability, reduce reliance on fossil fuels, and support the digital economy’s growth.
