A study sent groups of friends and relatives to eat at a café and asked half to keep their phones on the table. Those diners used their phones for only about a tenth of the meal, yet still reported enjoying the experience less, feeling more distracted and being slightly more bored than diners who put their phones away.

Phones on Café Tables: A Subtle Distraction with Measurable Effects

A phone resting on a café table rarely feels like a deliberate choice. Instead, it appears practical and unremarkable—ready to receive a call, display a map, or facilitate a payment. The same rectangle holds family chats and essential apps, so placing it beside your utensils can seem as automatic as setting down your keys.

For those managing work across time zones, like myself, availability often equates to responsibility. Yet, when a phone remains within arm’s reach, part of the conversation can feel tentative, as if the attention granted is provisional, pending something more urgent.

Such everyday moments inspired a field experiment published in the Journal of Experimental Social Psychology, which rigorously examined the impact of phone presence during shared meals. Groups of friends and family dined together at a local café, with half asked to keep their phones on the table and the other half to place them away.

Although phone use was minimal—only about 11% of the meal time—the groups with phones visible reported less enjoyment and more distraction. This doesn’t prove that every meal is spoiled by a phone’s presence, but it highlights how small interruptions can subtly alter our experiences before we even realize we’re being distracted.

Designing a Study That Conceals Its True Purpose

Researchers Ryan Dwyer, Kostadin Kushlev, and Elizabeth Dunn recruited 304 participants aged 19 to 69 from the University of British Columbia and the Vancouver community. Participants arrived in groups of three to five friends or family members for a study framed as an investigation into dining out experiences.

Groups were randomly assigned to either a “phone” or “phoneless” condition. In the phone condition, diners were told they would receive a study question via text after ordering, so they had to leave their phones on the table with ringer or vibration enabled. In the phoneless condition, the question would come on paper, so phones were silenced and placed in a container on the table.

This cover story effectively masked the real focus on phone usage, reducing social desirability bias in reporting. Additionally, the meals were videotaped with a small, visible camera, allowing coders to quantify phone interaction time. After dining, participants privately rated their enjoyment, distraction, boredom, and other experiential factors.

The study was preregistered, ensuring transparency in methods and statistical analyses, including adjustments for group-based randomization.

Minimal Phone Use, Yet Noticeable Differences

Video analysis revealed that diners with phones accessible interacted with them for an average of 11% of the meal, while those without phones on the table still engaged about 1% of the time, likely due to imperfect separation.

This means the majority of the meal—roughly 90%—was spent without phone interaction in the phone-present group. Despite this, the phone group rated their interest and enjoyment at 4.98 on a 7-point scale, compared to 5.36 in the phoneless group. They also reported higher distraction levels (2.84 versus 2.38). These differences, though modest, were statistically significant under the study’s preregistered criteria.

Boredom was marginally higher with phones present (2.21 vs. 1.93), but this did not meet the stricter statistical threshold. Other measured outcomes, such as social connectedness and mood, showed no reliable difference between groups. Overall, the researchers emphasized that the negative effects of phones on a single interaction are subtle rather than catastrophic.

Distraction, Not Opportunity Cost, Explains the Effect

The study explored two possible mechanisms: distraction caused by phones and opportunity cost—that is, phones reminding diners of other people or tasks demanding attention.

Analysis supported distraction as the key mediator. Phone availability increased reported distraction, which in turn correlated with lower enjoyment. Opportunity cost did not show a significant pattern. While mediation analysis cannot directly read minds, it suggests a plausible sequence: phone access leads to intermittent use, which fragments attention and diminishes engagement.

The paper also included a complementary study involving 123 university students who received five surveys daily over a week. Across 1,244 social episodes, phone use correlated with more distraction, less enjoyment, worse mood, decreased social connection, and increased boredom. However, since phone use was not randomly assigned in this observational study, causality remains uncertain.

Presence vs. Use: Distinguishing the Effects of Phones

It is tempting to conclude that simply having a phone on the table drains attention. However, the experiment tested both access and use simultaneously. Phones were visible, alerts were enabled, and usage increased. Therefore, the findings do not isolate the impact of a phone’s mere presence when untouched.

Broader research offers mixed evidence. A 2020 meta-analysis of 43 studies found strong negative perceptions when phones were used during interactions, but no consistent “mere presence” effect. Similarly, a 2024 meta-analysis covering 33 studies and 4,368 participants found no significant cognitive effect from smartphone presence alone.

These findings refine interpretation: a visible phone offers an opportunity to disengage, and actual use carries social meaning, but an inert device by itself does not necessarily consume cognitive resources.

In prior writing, I have discussed delaying phone use in the morning as a discipline to shift behavior by changing access. This principle applies here: altering phone accessibility can influence interaction quality, without attributing mystical power to the device itself.

Extending Findings Across Social Contexts

Subsequent experiments support the café study’s insights. A preregistered waiting-room experiment found that pairs of strangers with phone access displayed fewer genuine Duchenne smiles than those without phones, measured through objective video coding rather than self-report.

A 2023 registered experiment placed small groups of unfamiliar students in a recreation room for 20 minutes. Groups with phone access socialized less and reported a poorer experience, contradicting expectations that phones might ease initial social awkwardness.

Another study revealed that being repeatedly “phubbed” (ignored in favor of a phone) can undermine mood, basic psychological needs, and trust. While the café experiment focused on the phone user’s experience, this research highlights the relational harm caused to the person opposite the phone.

Together, these findings emphasize attention’s dual cognitive and relational roles. A glance at a phone divides focus and sends social signals. This explains why sharing silence without reaching for phones feels safe and intimate—the presence of an easy “exit” that neither party takes becomes a visible sign of trust.

Practical Boundaries Over Purity Tests

These insights do not demand rigid bans, digital detoxes, or moral grandstanding whenever someone checks a message. Phones can enrich meals by sharing photos, translating menus, arranging rides, or including absent loved ones.

The cost tends to arise when one person disengages alone rather than when everyone uses their device collectively. A practical approach is to designate one meal as phone-free and make this boundary visible—placing phones out of reach, such as in a bag rather than face down beside a plate.

If urgent calls are expected, stating this upfront helps. A 2026 experiment found that providing a clear reason for phone use improved perceived interaction quality. While explanation doesn’t recover lost attention, it prevents ambiguity from being interpreted as rejection.

It is also valuable to resist the impulse to fill every lull. Seven experiments showed that digital switching intended to escape boredom actually increased boredom during video viewing. Though distinct from conversation, this supports the café study’s suggestion: fragmented attention can make experiences feel less engaging, which then encourages further fragmentation.

This dynamic helps explain why time spent with others can still leave us craving authentic connection. Physical proximity is merely the setting; genuine connection requires staying mentally and emotionally available to what unfolds.

The best conversations aren’t uninterrupted because they never pause. They’re uninterrupted because both participants allow pauses to remain part of the dialogue.

Ultimately, a phone-free meal won’t manufacture intimacy by itself, nor will a phone on the table erase it. Attention has boundaries, and moving a device beyond reach can help preserve the space around the person sitting right there.
