Understanding the Impact of a 20-Minute Park Break on Stress Markers

Spending just twenty minutes in a park might seem like too simple an intervention to have any measurable effect on stress. There’s no prescribed workout, no specialized breathing technique, and no need to venture into a remote forest. Whether walking slowly, sitting on a bench, or doing a combination of both, a brief connection with nature can still bring about physiological changes.

A small field study has demonstrated that this type of ordinary engagement with natural surroundings can lead to a noticeable drop in cortisol—a hormone often linked to stress—beyond what would be expected as part of its normal daily decline. Interestingly, the most effective window for this change appeared to be between 20 and 30 minutes.

The detail that participants could sit as well as walk highlights that the cortisol reduction isn’t simply a disguised effect of exercise. However, it’s important to clarify that the researchers measured biological markers, not subjective feelings of well-being, and they did not claim that 20 minutes is a universal prescription for everyone.

Measuring Saliva, Not Subjective Feelings

The 2019 University of Michigan study (source) involved 36 adults living near Ann Arbor, Michigan, who spent time outdoors in places they personally selected for their natural qualities. Participants chose their timing and duration but were required to spend at least 10 minutes outside, at least three times a week over eight weeks.

On four occasions, participants collected saliva samples immediately before and after their nature visits. The researchers analyzed two stress-related biomarkers: cortisol and alpha-amylase.

Cortisol is often dubbed the “stress hormone,” but it plays many vital roles throughout the body and naturally fluctuates during the day—typically peaking around waking and tapering off by night. Variables like food intake, exercise, sleep, medication, and timing of sample collection can all influence cortisol levels, complicating straightforward interpretations.

To address this, the study’s statistical model estimated each participant’s normal cortisol decline throughout the day and calculated the additional change linked specifically to the nature experience. The results showed a 21.3% per hour cortisol reduction attributable to the nature session, beyond the expected 11.7% hourly diurnal drop.

These findings indicate a short-term physiological shift rather than a direct measurement of pain relief, energy boost, or overall physical health. While many may describe such changes as “feeling physically better,” this was not a measured outcome of the study.

Optimal Time Frame: Twenty to Thirty Minutes

The commonly cited “20-minute rule” is a simplified takeaway from the study’s more nuanced analysis.

Researchers categorized 110 recorded nature sessions into four duration groups. The 21-to-30-minute group showed the largest cortisol decrease beyond the normal daily rhythm. Although sessions longer than 30 minutes also reduced cortisol, the benefit accrued more slowly with additional time.

This suggests that 20 to 30 minutes is the point of best return within this dataset—not a strict cutoff where benefits suddenly appear after 19 minutes.

Shorter sessions (7 to 14 minutes and 15 to 20 minutes) were less represented in the data and, according to the authors, the sample size was insufficient to confidently characterize responses in these brackets. Therefore, the takeaway should be modest: if you can spare about a third of an hour, this study supports that as a reasonable window for a beneficial nature break. It does not argue that shorter periods are ineffective or that longer ones lack value.

Sitting vs. Walking: Both Support Cortisol Reduction

Participants were free to sit, walk, or mix both during their nature sessions. They were asked to avoid aerobic exercise, phone calls, social media, reading, and conversation, making the sessions quieter and more contemplative than typical park visits.

The cortisol response was consistent regardless of whether participants walked or sat. However, alpha-amylase—a second stress biomarker—was more sensitive to activity differences, leading researchers to treat cortisol as the more robust indicator for this field study.

This does not imply walking and sitting are physiologically identical. Walking has its own health benefits, and the study was not designed to compare exercise with rest. Rather, within these non-aerobic nature exposures, cortisol reduction did not depend on physical movement.

This finding enhances accessibility: those who feel tired, have mobility limitations, or simply prefer to rest can still potentially benefit from a quiet moment in green space.

It also suggests that the cortisol shift is unlikely to be explained solely by movement. Instead, factors like the natural setting, a break from daily demands, reduced digital distractions, or a combination thereof may contribute, though this study cannot separate these influences.

Broader Evidence Supports Nature’s Stress-Reducing Effects

Beyond this study, the general consensus in scientific literature supports the idea that short periods in green spaces can lower stress markers, although the exact dose and effects vary.

A systematic review of 12 studies (source) found that all seven studies measuring physiological stress reported an inverse relationship with nature exposure. Five of six studies measuring perceived stress also showed lower self-reported stress after nature contact. These studies employed diverse outcomes—ranging from cortisol and blood pressure to heart-rate variability and brain imaging—indicating a broad association rather than a precise 20-minute prescription.

Another scoping review focusing on college-aged adults (source) found beneficial changes after both sitting and walking in nature, often within 10 to 30 minutes, though some measures showed mixed results. Not every participant reported improvements in perceived stress, happiness, or attention.

Such variability is important. Physiological markers and subjective feeling states do not always align. People may feel calm before measurable biomarker changes occur, experience biological shifts without conscious awareness, or have negative experiences in parks due to heat, noise, allergies, safety concerns, or discomfort.

The Practical Value of an Undemanding Nature Break

The study’s greatest strength—participants choosing their own settings and schedules—also limits the findings. Without a randomized urban or indoor control group, a small and demographically narrow sample (92% female, 86% white), and participants self-selecting because they wanted more outdoor time, the results are best viewed as a starting point rather than a universal rule.

The authors emphasized the need for broader samples, seasonal variation, and more diverse environments to strengthen understanding.

Nonetheless, the practical message remains compelling. A restorative break does not have to be strenuous, costly, or goal-oriented. Participants were not required to track steps or maintain movement. Sitting quietly in a green space was compatible with the cortisol reduction observed, and the window of 20 to 30 minutes fits easily into everyday life.

While twenty minutes in a park won’t guarantee any individual’s physiological response, it can demonstrate that sitting quietly in nature is an active, beneficial experience—not “doing nothing.”
