Blockchain Pioneer Targets Prediction With Verifiable Trust

Date:

The New Frontier of Trust in the Age of AI and Blockchain

Every great company is built on a bet about trust. Visa bet that strangers would trust a piece of plastic. Airbnb bet that travelers would trust a stranger’s spare room. Today, as artificial intelligence advances rapidly, enabling cheap and convincing digital fabrications, the stakes for trust have never been higher. The ability to prove what is real, and who is real, is becoming one of the most valuable assets a company can offer in this new digital landscape.

Few understand this challenge and opportunity better than W. Scott Stornetta, a foundational figure in blockchain technology. Stornetta has recently joined SafeBets.world, a zero-wager prediction platform, as chair of its Advisory Council. His mission: to help reinvent the prediction industry on a foundation of verifiable trust, tackling a sector plagued by credibility issues.

W. Scott Stornetta: Turning Trust into Proof

W. Scott Stornetta is not just a scientist but also a seasoned builder of trust-enabling technology. In 1991, he and Stuart Haber published a seminal paper titled “How to Time-Stamp a Digital Document,” introducing the concept of cryptographically linking records. This innovation is now recognized as a cornerstone of blockchain technology and is cited in the original 2008 Bitcoin whitepaper, underscoring its foundational role in the development of distributed ledger systems.

After pioneering this research, Stornetta commercialized it through his company Surety, which ran the first commercial digital time-stamping service. Surety publicly published cryptographic fingerprints weekly in the New York Times, maintaining an unbroken chain for three decades. More recently, Stornetta co-founded SureMark Digital, a venture focused on helping individuals prove their identity and authorship in an age dominated by deepfakes and synthetic media. Across these enterprises, the unifying mission is clear: to transform trust from an abstract concept into a provable, verifiable fact.

The Opportunity Within the Prediction Industry’s Trust Gap

Prediction markets and forecasting platforms have surged in popularity, with millions staking opinions on elections, financial markets, and global events. However, the industry faces a significant credibility problem. Many platforms allow anonymous or minimally verified identities, and track records are often unverifiable. Additionally, wagering-based models attract regulatory scrutiny and public skepticism, often perceived as mere betting disguised as prediction.

SafeBets.world, under the leadership of Stornetta and founder Alex Konanykhin, aims to address these issues by offering a zero-wager platform. Users can forecast outcomes across crypto, commodity, stock, and currency markets without placing bets. Instead, SafeBets rewards the most accurate predictors and aggregates their insights into a Collective Intelligence. Crucially, the platform plans to credential its top predictors and record forecasts with cryptographic proof, ensuring that every prediction is verifiably linked to its author and timestamped. This method prevents post-outcome alterations, enhancing trust and transparency.

“For 30 years, our work was about making records impossible to forge,” Stornetta explains. “Prediction is a natural next step. If you can prove who made a forecast and that it was never altered, you can finally trust the track record behind it.”

Konanykhin echoes this sentiment: “The prediction industry has a credibility problem, and credibility is exactly what Scott has spent his life engineering. That is our advantage.”

Lessons for Entrepreneurs: Trust as a Competitive Advantage

Entrepreneurs should view the challenges in prediction as part of a broader, emergent pattern: trust is eroding across industries, accelerated by AI’s ability to generate realistic fakes—from customer interactions to video calls to news reporting. This breakdown creates a unique space for businesses that can offer verifiable trust as a product.

Recruiting leading experts like Stornetta is itself a strategic move. Equally important is differentiating from incumbents by adopting models that incumbents cannot easily replicate—such as SafeBets’ no-wager, cryptographically verifiable approach. Trust is rapidly evolving into a standalone product category, and founders who recognize and build around this will have a significant head start.

While SafeBets’ ultimate success depends on execution and navigating evolving regulations, the trajectory is unmistakable. The first era of blockchain technology taught machines to agree on what is true. The next era will turn that capability into tangible business value. Founders who can make trust something their customers can prove will lead this new wave. As Stornetta’s involvement signals, the prediction industry may just be the beginning.
