OpenAI is making a significant strategic move by appointing Prabhjeet Singh, the former president of Uber India and South Asia, as its first managing director for India. Singh, who recently announced his resignation from Uber, is set to join OpenAI in September. He will report to Kiran Mani, OpenAI’s managing director for Asia Pacific. India has become a critical battleground for leading U.S. AI firms, driven by its enormous developer ecosystem and surging interest in generative AI technologies. OpenAI’s competitor, Anthropic, recently opened an office in Bengaluru and appointed Irina Ghose, former managing director of Microsoft India, as its head, indicating intensifying competition among AI leaders in the region.
